WHAT I DID
Opened http://www.salon.com/2012/12/14/the_nra_is_the_enabler_of_mass_murderers/ (and other stories).

WHAT HAPPENED
Salon.com social media links (e.g., Twitter) do not work reliably in Firefox 9.0.1-17.0.1 on Windows 7x64 (with all add-ons disabled, Safe Mode, Reset Firefox, or new Default profile). Sometimes counts are blank and links do not work.

WHAT SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED
Social media links should display counts and links should work. They do work reliably in Chrome and Internet Explorer, and in Firefox 3.6.28-8.0.1
Cannot reproduce elsewhere.

Error inherent in salon.com (as with troll-link specious claims)
Problem duplicated by Mozilla Support Forum Moderator:
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/944463#answer-390300

Other strong indicators this is a current Firefox problem:
1. Works in Chrome and IE.
2. Works in Firefox 8.01 and earlier.
I only looked at the missing counts at the top and I can always reproduce the missing counts if you reload the page once.

Last good nightly: 2011-09-27
First bad nightly: 2011-09-28

I will try to bisect but that could fail
btw: Opera12 doesn't display the counts.

There are several errors in the error console:

In the error console shows the following information:
>cdn.api.twitter.com:443 uses an invalid security certificate.
>The certificate is not trusted because the issuer certificate is not trusted.
>(Error code: sec_error_untrusted_issuer)

When I accept cert from https://cdn.api.twitter.com/, Firefox shows the counts properly.
I don't get a cert error for https://cdn.api.twitter.com/ but the result may depend on the server that responds to your request.
This problem seems to be fixed by Firefox 18.
