See bug 823730. pythonpath seems to no longer be needed in many cases, but remains in use in several test make targets; we may be able to remove it.
My changes in bug 823730 were mostly reverted in bug 597064. I do not see an explanation, but assume pythonpath was needed in some circumstance. There's not much value in looking at this further, and some risk of breakage.
