I would like to work on this feature. I've attached what I believe should be the necessary UI changes.
Comment on attachment 785690 [details] Contacts-Quick-Search-Proposal.png Thank you taking this bug and to help improving TB. Asking for ui-review without a requestee makes no sense. No one feels responsible and the request could stay for ever. For TB the best person to ask for ui-r would be bwinton. If he would be too busy you could also ask me ;) I think the position of the search is good but I gave ui-r- because the search field should be done more obvious like the other search fields. I'll attach a screenshot how it should look. With this in mind go on with your work to implement this feature.

Thank you for your review. I'm quite new to contributing to Thunderbird and using bugzilla. I had no idea what to fill in for the "reviewer" box, and so I left it blank. Now I know :) I will make the suggested changes and continue with the implementation!

This proposal pertains with how the search results should be shown. I propose that a new "group" be created titled "Search results". This group will appear only if the user has typed something in the search bar. Another alternative, suggested by Florian Quèze, is to filter the Online/Offline lists themselves. Hence, if the user makes a search query, the contacts that do not match will be hidden from the Online/Offline lists.

Comment on attachment 788679 [details] search-results-proposal.png This is looking good but I support Florian's proposal to directly filter the lists. Then it's visible which contacts are online or offline through the grouping.

Unassigning as this hasn't seen any activity in a long time.
