In Mozilla 1.6 I was able to prefix view-source on to a URL for an image to look at the (binary, except for xbm images) code behind the image. In particular, I was browsing a website where someone had accidentally published a PSD file instead of converting it to PNG first. I wanted to be able to view the source of the file to be able to identify it as a PSD file (the first 4 characters are 8BPS) but I was unable to do so in a current version of Gecko. Instead, the view-source prefix has no effect, except to change the title of a broken image to (APPLICATION/X-VIEW-SOURCE Image).
That was changed with bug 464339

Indeed. In that case I won't be surprised if this gets resolved as invalid. (But maybe we could use this bug to implement a pref for the behaviour as per attachment 411103 [details] [diff] [review].)
