User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:17.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/17.0
Build ID: 20121128204232

Steps to reproduce:

My issue started like #821265, and I thought that it was a design error that would soon be corrected with an an update, but it was not. The problem has now grown to 4 Tabs in bottom row. They get there when an inbox window opens with a popup labeled Alert and saysThis folder is being processed. Please wait until processing is complete to get messages. When I click OK

Actual results:

It changes to a tab along the bottom, now up to 4. Clicking any one of these tabs closes TB.

Expected results:

I should only get 1 tab along the bottom reading: Inbox - Mozilla Th..
This is TB version 17.0

Contrary to David Lechner's Statements:
1. I still get 4 tabs when TB opens. (I used to get 2, but then it switched to 4.
2. My OS is not W7, but XPpro
3. Using ALT + F4 closes TB but there are still 4 tabs when TB is reopened.
4. If this problem has been RESOLVED, kindly notify me of the resolution, and how to delete or eliminate the extra tabs.
5. RESOLVED? No way Mr. Jose!

I see that I was overly optimistic that this would resolve your issue!

Did you try deleting session.json (with Thunderbird closed)? On XP, this would be in C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\<profile>\
1. Thanks for your reply.
2. For reasons that I will explain below, I install TB on D:\, not C:\.
I did a complete search (including hidden files) for file "session.json" with TB both closed and open, and no file such was found in either case.

---following not related to current bug, provided as general feedback ---

3. Infrequently, I am able to logon to my Windows account because my user credentials have been scrambled, and I used to keep TB and FF on drive D:\ because the ultimate remedy was to clean C:\ and reinstall Windows, but preserve TB and FF structures on D:\.
4. With the new Windows, FF and TB would not run because they were not registered.
5. I HOPED that reinstalling FF and TB, they would have the sense to search for any existing user files and provide the option, but they did not have this capability, and my existing FF and TB files were deleted, anyway.
6. I submitted a request that the capability to install these previous user files be included in TB and FF installation, but received a response that my request (simple enough) was not understood by the keepers of TB and FF.
7. I have a new workaround now with a backup Administrator Account, so when this damage occurs I can make repairs via this account: restore default user account, and remove recently installed programs until all symptoms have disappeared. iTunes has been the worst trouble maker.

It should not matter where TB is installed, your profile will still be under your user account, not the TB install directory - unless you did something to relocate it manually. This link has more info.

This time when I opened TB, I only got one tab.
No current problem.
Resolved, I opine.
