User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:17.0) Gecko/17.0 Firefox/17.0 Build ID: 20121203162408 Steps to reproduce: I Set Thunderbird to sort specific newsgroups by date ascending. Actual results: Thunderbird changed it, but then next time I came back, the newsgroups were usually sorted by date descending. Expected results: Thunderbird should leave newsgroups sorted the way you choose, instead of changing it each time.
David, do you still see this problem?

No, because starting sometime before this report, to recent years, I had transitioned from Thunderbird because of what I consider many design flaws (most/all noted elsewhere) making it different from years/decades ago. If ever possible to use exactly as a plain pre-tab style correctly handling classic UNIX-type mboxes without adding superfluous stuff, I would switch back and check this bug again.

I can't reproduce the issue you describe. It sounds like you may be losing the .msf file (which is not normal), and therefor the sorting. If you should return to using Thunderbird and be able to reproduce, please do reopen the bug
