(Whiteboard: closeme 2013-07-19)
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1) AppleWebKit/537.11 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/23.0.1271.97 Safari/537.11
Steps to reproduce:
After opening the browser, I cannot get response from any sites. I can open the same sites with other browsers, but would prefer Firefox.
Actual results:
The browser is apparently attempting to find sites from my previous session, but the little circle keeps rotating - constantly!
Expected results:
The website (s) should open for browsing, etc. I uninstalled Firefox, and reinstalled, which gave me Ver. 18 (it was 17 previously) but the same thing happens. I can't even get a response from the "Help" tab.
The computer is connected to a cable internet connection. It does not respond either wired or wirelessly.
Chrome and Safari both access websites as expected. I do not use IE.

Please try it in the Firefox safemode ?
@Matthias: Good suggestion, unfortunately, the result is the same. The little loops circle counterclockwise endlessly, indicating (I think) no contact with the site. Or does it mean no contact with the net?

Do you got the special safemode startup dialog ?
I'm not sure what you mean. On startup, I chose Safe Mode with Networking, then another page that had Windows XP as the only option. Selecting that got me through to the start page of XP. I opened the browser from the shortcut.
I had gone into Ffox before restarting the computer, but I could not find a safe mode reference in the 'about' or 'help' tabs. Where would I find a link to the safe mode?

Help/restart with addons disabled or close Firefox and hold the shift key while clicking on the Firefox icon on your Desktop
Holding the shift key and double-clicking the shortcut icon opens a dialog box indicating Firefox Safe mode, but the display is identical to normal mode; none of the tabs respond, just as in normal, and entering an email address similarly yields nothing.

Please be sure that you set the network to "no proxy" in options/advanced/network/connection->settings
In case that this doesn't help try a new, additional profile

Setting 'no proxy' makes no difference.
I will try a new profile, but I don't know how that will help, since I am able to access the net through Safari and Chrome.

I don't understand why asking to create a new Firefox profile (not windows profile) let you add a comment about chrome/safari.
Do you use a third party Firewall like Norton360, Zonealarm or something like that ?

I added a Firefox profile; when I tried to download a new Firefox, I was not asked which profile to use.
Chrome and Safari link to all websites without difficulty. Firefox has been loaded - the newest version, of course - three times today. I still get no connection, nor do I get time-outs or any other notices of connection issues.
My IP knowledge is not too current, and I may be missing some component of what I need to reconnect Firefox.
I also can't understand why I suddenly lost the connections. I have used Firefox for several years and like(d) the way it worked. I am sure my computer can't be at fault, otherwise the other browsers would also be dead.

Sorry, I forgot to reply about firewalls. No, we don't use a firewall, but do have McAfee security, provided with the cable isp.

>I added a Firefox profile
You did that with the help of the article that i have posted ?
bugzilla is the developer area of mozilla.org and not the support (http://support.mozilla.org) and I have problems to follow your comments as I expect them to be a little bit more technical. That's the reason why I don't help at the support.
> I am sure my computer can't be at fault, otherwise the other browsers would also be dead.
If I follow that logic I could say: I know that Firefox can't be at fault because it works on millions of system.
The truth is in the middle. There is something special on your system that prevents Firefox from correctly working.
reasons:
a) You have an extension installed that breaks Firefox - already tested with the safemode
b) we have known bugs with the proxy settings in FF18- already tested with "no proxy"
c) There could be something else wrong in your Firefox user profile - already tested a new profile ?
d) you have a firewall Software installed that failed to recognize that Firefox updated
Please read : http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/configure-firewalls-so-firefox-can-access-internet
I suggest that you read the support article about the firewalls. McAfee is a Firewall and you should follow the McAfee article to fix it.

I will read the support article whose link you sent.
However, I have some doubts of a solution there. This is because Firefox was working for me until late in December, yet the McAfee package has been active since mid-summer 2012. If there was some interaction, would it not have shown up sooner?

There is nothing else to suggest if the safemode/a new profile and resetting the firewall doesn't help
For the new profile: Do you created a new profile with the profile manager or do you had issues with it ?

I read Mozilla's config suggestions for McAfee, but the version we have doesn't have a 'settings' box, no matter what features or links are selected.
The system is scanned every two weeks (scheduled for 0400 Mountain time Monday next) and has had a threat update most recently in late December. I have no control over default settings.

I did create a new profile, but when trying to load a new version, there was no decision box or option to use one profile or the other. Maybe I missed a step...

Internal Firefox pages like about:support are loading ?
(just enter it the address bar)
In case that the internal page loads you can use the "Reset Firefox" at the top right.
There is really not much that I can do if Firefox still doesn't work after that.
