While zoom worked, as did changing font size, the relative size of fonts was ridiculously small. I found no way to change it. Turning off all extensions did not help, nor did installing a nightly build. Expected results: Restoring to FF17 restored things to correct sizing.

Do you have an external monitor attached? Does the problem persist if you turn off HiDPI mode? (Do this by entering about:config in the Location bar and setting gfx.hidpi.enabled to -1.)
(Following up comment #1) After setting gfx.hidpi.enabled to -1, you also need to restart Firefox.
1) No external monitor attached. 2) I tested setting gfx.hidpi.enabled to -1 using the nightly build 21.0a1 (2013-01-14), and yes, that seems to fix the problem. Default is set to 2, and the problem happens again. (1 yes, 0 no)
I'm very puzzled why you're seeing this problem, while for others it works fine in HiDPI mode. Could you please post the contents of about:support (or Help / Troubleshooting Information) from your Firefox?
