Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; rv:18.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/18.0
Build ID: 20130104151925

Steps to reproduce:

When an alternative folder is set in "Tools > Account Settings > Server Settings > When I delete a Message: Move it to this Folder" option, the setting is overridden when the program starts back up.

Actual results:

We use Google Apps (Gmail exhibits this issue also) for our email. We are using IMAP. Because Gmail has only a 30 day retention on Trash, I have been directing TB to move my mail into a folder I created called "Deleted" which I can manage myself. This has worked for many years

On Jan 14, 2013, after an upgrade to TB v.17, I noticed that mail that was being deleted was not in the "Deleted" folder, but rather in the [Gmail]\Trash folder (ie: it was being deleted into Google's Trash). I noticed that by changing the "When I delete a message" option to something else, and then reverting back to "Move it to this folder...", the setting would take hold. Additionally, the selected folder (Deleted) would change to a "Trash Can" icon. HOWEVER, when re-starting Thunderbird, it would sync back up with Google and revert the "Trash Can" icon back to the [Gmail]\Trash folder, and all delete actions would move to that folder from that point.

Ultimately, I have had to "Unsubscribe" from the "Trash" folder for the settings to remain permanent.

Expected results:

Thunderbird should move deleted messages to the folder specified in the "Tools > Account Settings > Server Settings > When I delete a Message" option. This setting should be permanent, and not be overridden upon program startup / sync with server.

I have been able to reproduce this behavior on every Gmail account that I have. It appears that regardless of the folder chosen for the delete action, upon initial sync with Gmail IMAP server, the [Gmail]\Trash folder is selected as the trash destination.
