I've seen this too; even if you start typing a URL right after Firefox start, it won't load because there's no Gecko context. You have to back out and then go back in to get a proper Gecko context in the Java UI.

I don't believe I've seen this happen recently. I'm pretty sure we fixed it a while ago.
