Lots of search/personal assistant design is "invisible" -- it has no interface. A search interface's success hinges on responsiveness, whether result weighting matches the needs of the user, good suggestions, etc.
There are 2 ways to explore visible design:
1. Storyboard it. User stories help clarify how the "invisible" decisions should be made.
2. Prototype it. And test -> tune -> test -> tune -> test -> tune.
