User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.6; rv:18.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/18.0
Build ID: 20130116073211

Steps to reproduce:

I use Thunderbird 3.1.8 on Mac OS X 10.6.8, and v.17.0.2 on Win XP (SP3).

Many of my most important emails contain attachments. If synchronization is designed to enable me to work offline, I need to have the attachments downloaded and cached as well as the emails; the latter are no good without the former. It would be nice to have the option of allowing both emails AND their attachments to be automatically synced and cached.

In addition, having large attachments downloaded and cached locally in the background would greatly speed up my workflow, which is regularly impeded whenever I must wait, twiddling my thumbs, as the progress bar inches across the bottom of my screen every time I open an email with a huge attachment.
