Hi creative team! As part of the RASCI for the Mozilla 15th anniversary, we're doing a take for consumers on "15 things you didn't know about Mozilla." Part of that is a blog post, and part of that is presenting it as an infographic on social channels (both for official channels, and in the community channels.) Since it's a Facebook campaign, predominantly, we need it to fit into a 403x403 pixel size. I'm totally open to suggestions on the creative, but I'm attaching some examples I found that I thought might work. http://visual.ly/inside-mind-freelancer http://visual.ly/brand-network (some are attached to the bug as well) Since this is the Mozilla anniversary, I'm thinking we'd have more Mozilla styles/colors than Firefox ones, but it will go on our Firefox channel. So you probably have more insight than I do. Now it gets tricky :) We will need to localize this. At LEAST in ES, DE, PT-Br, FR, ID - and communities are clamoring for something to go on their pages, and I'm guessing that means more locales on their way. Other languages often have longer strings. The first 5 locales are due to me Feb. 15 - so we'll have a little more than a month to work them in. I suggest we start with EN, get that one designed and ready by end of February, and then tinker with the localized ones in March. I know MWC is in our way - would a due date for design in EN by Feb. 28 be too aggressive? I just want to give you the time you'll need for all the localized versions. Please let me know. Thanks Carmen, few questions: * How does this fit into the other efforts for the moz15? I'm not aware of anything else happening and want to make sure we're not duplicating efforts -- last I heard the moz15 was the Foundation's initiative. * Infographics are awesome, and the concept of 15 facts and historical elements is a nice one... but I really don't see how we can squish all the data you provided into a 403 by 403 graphic without it being a very text heavy image. I would recommend optimizing for a blog post vs. facebook... or reconcept the facebook image so that it provides enough breathing space for the copy and graphics. For example, the facebook graphic could be something simple that marks the 15th year, and a link that points people to learn more about mozilla via infographic.
also, it's generally best to wait for design to begin (if not be final) before localizing the copy as copy tends to shift a little once design begins. Just my 2 cents.

I've seen it done elsewhere - can we give it a try? Maybe infographic is the wrong word, but I understand it'll be text-heavy, but I think that's okay, and something that becomes very shareable.

Just my 2 cents. My apologies. I knew everyone was slammed with MWC, and I was trying to be pro-active, as I knew that we'd have a longer timeline for this. I'll note that for the future.
assigning to Matt for now.

Matt - pinging here. This is due next week, and I'm thinking we'll need a couple of rounds of updates as we work this one out. How is your schedule looking to get a first pass?
Hi Carmen, the 28th is starting to look a bit aggressive now. Matt is working on a few other bugs with tight timelines but he's got this on his radar and will be working on it soon. It's actually a pretty tricky graphic and will take time to play with layout and discuss feedback. Isn't the mozilla 15th year anniversary at the end of March? what is our flexibility around the timing here for this post?
Thanks Tara, Since you'll also have to create several localized versions of the graphic, I was trying to give you a long tail of time to get those finalized mid-March, so we can get those out to localizers. As you mentioned, I forsee a lot of playing with the graphic and feedback. We actually don't have a ton of flexibilty here, but what we do have is the opportunity to outsource the graphic. Barbara H. has worked with someone in the past, and she originally suggested that with our current resource contraints, that would be an option. And that's totally fine, I just need to know ASAP so I can work out the details. Please advise. Carmen
Thanks Carmen. Do you have the name or sample works of this other designer that I can view? Another option we could consider is for Matt to do the EN version and outsourcing the localized versions.
I'll check with Barbara - she told me that this designer had worked with you all before on other infographics. I'm happy to have Matt do the EN version. :) I'm concerned that with other locales, as the text gets longer (like with German and Russian) if each one wouldn't need some tweaking. However, we have another complication. We're localizing this in ALL locales, not just the email or social locales. To go through the l10n process will take us about a month, which is why we'd need the EN version by the end of Feb. (they want the graphic first, as per your suggestion above.)
I have to agree with Tara on this one. I fully get the importance of l10n and understand the process, but it doesn't seem right to spend a week doing the design and then a month localizing it. That's not a recipe for the outcome we all want. Also, nothing against Barbara's designer, but for a complicated, high-visibility project like this I really want to use someone who I fully know and trust. Can we explore any leeway in the l10n process here? Or consider launching this as part of a different 15th anniversary post later in the month?
Carmen and I will sync up tomorrow. But worst case, we'll just launch in EN and push the others out as they come in. Could we shoot for a final EN image by March 8? That would give localizers three weeks.
That's much better. Thanks Winston. Matt will jump on this and into this bug to share updates asap.

Thank you! And just for reference - Carmen was working on dates she got back from localization peeps. But that was assuming we launched all at once. We can def prioritize markets. Thanks again.
Also - ccing Ryan here since foundation is in charge of this project.
Winston and I chatted: * He's going to have Matej review the copy and make sure it's solid: crisp, as short as possible, inspiring, etc. Once Matej approves, we'll lock it in and push it to localization. This'll allow us to localize this in as many languages as possible (per Mitchell's request) * Winston is going to speak with Carmen and see if we can point to the graphic from fb, vs. posting it there so that we have a larger canvas size to work with. Basically optimizing for a blog post vs. a social media post. note: if the copy is chopped down, we may be able to accommodate the smaller fb post size. But if the copy is long we can greatly benefit from a bigger space. * L10n question: if we're planning on localizing this in something like 80 languages (Winston correct me if I heard wrong) how are we planning on distributing the graphic? is the Den blog or our Facebook presence going to accommodate these locales? or would this graphic be distributed some other way?
Seems like a good solution - thanks guys.
Hi all. Below are some revisions from me. Mostly I removed "Mozilla" where I could, so it wasn't so repetitive, and shortened it where else I could. Otherwise it looks good to me. 15 things you might not know about Mozilla 1. We make Firefox! 2. We're a non-profit 3. We launched March 31, 1998 4. Our products are made by a community 5. Our community is global 6. Mozilla 1.0 was released in 2002 7. We rely on donations 8. We launched Firefox on Nov. 9, 2004 9. We fight for a free, open Web 10. You can volunteer with us 11. We teach others to make the Web 12. We have a mission 13. We make more than Firefox 14. We put users first 15. We're taking the Open Web mobile!
(In reply to Tara (musingt) from comment #17) > * L10n question: if we're planning on localizing this in something like 80 > languages (Winston correct me if I heard wrong) how are we planning on > distributing the graphic? is the Den blog or our Facebook presence going to > accommodate these locales? or would this graphic be distributed some other > way? Many communities will just take it and put it out through their own channels, including among others their facebook page and their website. BTW here is some sample work done by the community for the recent Add-ons infographic: http://firefox.hu/firefox-add-on-localized-infographics/
Thanks Matej and Brian, very helpful. Winston and Carmen, what are the next steps? How would you like to proceed? It would be helpful to know for what format / channel we should be optimizing the graphic for before we get started.
My understanding from Winston is that Ryan will be setting up a kick-off call to get clarification. (we had a kick-off back in January, but since then, the Accountable in the RASCI has changed to the Foundation) The original idea was to optimize for Facebook, because outside of EN and ES, we didn't have any place to land folks in other locales (for our email and social channels) But when the kickoff kicks off :) I'll have more information. So we're in a holding pattern. I realize that because of the holding pattern and the timing, we may need to re-scope the original plan. But we're hoping to stay the course.
We're in a workweek here at the Foundation. I'll be organizing the kick-off for next week.
Update: Tara - I could use your feedback on these next steps 1. Matej's copy is done. 2. I have localized copy already, some attached to this bug. I will follow up with them with Matej's new copy and get revisions. That shouldn't be hard, as the localizers were already trying to make it as short as possible in their language. QUESTION: Do I need to do this now, seeing the time frame, or should I wait until after the EN version of the graphic is done? I need at least a week for my localizers 3. We start designing the infographic. 4. There is no size constraint. It can be full infographic size. Please note, however, that to promote in email and on Facebook, we'll have to crop a section to 403x403 (for Facebook), email we can work with. So it would be helpful if Matt could keep that in mind when designing. It needs to be a clean crop. 5. We will focus the localizations on: EN, ES, PT-BR, DE, ID, RU, FR (Email and social languages) 6. Best case scenario is that we localize it in as many other languages as possible to support the community toolkit part of this initiative. Specifically our FirefoxOS locales (Poland, Serbia, etc.) Our drop dead due date for the main 7 locales would be March 25, text and design. The other locales would be nice to haves on that date. But I need Brian King's help in prioritizing that. (It would go through L10N for localization, not the consumer channel localizers) The idea is that brand is going to create a microsite to house all of the localized infographics, so we don't need to stay in the 403x403 facebook contraints. That would be better all around, if we could do it (it accounts for a Plan B should something not happen with the microsite) but it's not a requirement. Did I miss anything? Thanks for your help.
Thanks Carmen, I'm catching up on all this and will get back to you asap.
Unless we plan to have English localizations, it would be good if we could slightly de-Americanize the bullets? If the below suggestions are just as understandable in the US, then perhaps we could adopt them, as they are definitely better outside it. (In reply to Matej Novak [:matej] from comment #19) > 3. We launched March 31, 1998 We launched _on_ March 31st, 1998 > 6. Mozilla 1.0 was released in 2002 (If the other dates are precise, should this one also be precise?) > 10. You can volunteer with us You can volunteer _for_ us Hope that helps, Gerv
Yes Gervase - I kind of jumped the gun a bit, and the locales that already started working on these are yes - making it work for their location.
(In reply to Gervase Markham [:gerv] from comment #26) > (In reply to Matej Novak [:matej] from comment #19) > > 3. We launched March 31, 1998 > > We launched _on_ March 31st, 1998 I'm fine adding "on." It's not technically correct without it in US English either, but I was trying to save space and thought it was OK for Facebook. I find the ordinal unnecessary and redundant, though. Let's go with this: We launched on March 31, 1998 > > 6. Mozilla 1.0 was released in 2002 > > (If the other dates are precise, should this one also be precise?) If we have it, let's use it. > > 10. You can volunteer with us > > You can volunteer _for_ us This one's tricky. "For us" sounds odd to my ears, but I'm wondering if that's just me. Anyone else? Maybe we could do this: You can become a volunteer
Hey guys, lets briefly pause on this thread since have a separate etherpad discussing 15 facts and things may change. Matej - I'll update you soon.
Closing this out - lets open a new bug once we've finalized social media plan based on new direction.
