I've seen this over the last two weeks twice again. The GMail tab is consuming ~1.6GB of memory now, and each time when I switch to a different tab the CC/GC seems to be run on the GMail tab that is causing a delay of some milliseconds (indicated by a loading wheel) when switching back to that tab. Here a Firefox profile: https://share.firefox.dev/46v3yzK
Here a verbose memory dump:

Not sure if I had the DevTool's browser toolbox open which might indicate a relationship to bug 1689863?
Andrew, do you have an idea?

Were you using recent Nightly? https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1863491 fixed a bad regression.

No, mine was Nightly 121.0a1 (20231112094805). So that is a revision from before that fix landed. I'll keep an eye on the memory usage. Thanks for pointing out!

I just saw the problem again with Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.15; rv:131.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/131.0 ID:20240818204048
Gmail is using 2.4GB of memory and shows again a lot of orphaned nodes. Sadly I cannot create a verbose memory report because the process is not listed - maybe we fail to create a report for that content process?

So I have this again and I tried to do a verbose measurement but that doesn't seem to produce more output:

Well, in general the next step would be to get GC/CC logs, but I don't think anybody is going to have time to investigate what is likely a leak in gmail. Plus when the leak gets this big, the GC/CC logs are difficult to analyze. Note that GC/CC logs contain a lot of personal info, like every string stored in the page, so you should not share them with others or put them here.

Thanks Andrew. I assume there is no script which could potentially be used to analyze at least roughly the output and to figure out what's going on? If not, maybe there are some hints in how to analyze it? Is something documented?

If the find_roots script doesn't break because the logs are too big, you'd have to figure out which are the orphan DOM nodes by looking at the raw output (this isn't too bad because it looks like most of the heap is going to be orphan nodes so you'd just pick a half dozen and try them all), then the script could tell you a path holding alive the object. I don't know what you do with that information though.

Thanks when it happened again I'll try to at least have a log available locally that I can check once in a while to figure out how get the required data extracted.

If you find the leak, and it turns out to be Gmail itself which is leaking (that is quite possible), then reporting the issue to Google would be great.
(I recently reported about a massive leak in Youtube to them - that leak happens in many browsers)

And usually it is easier to analyze GC/CC logs when the leak hasn't got too bad yet.

After fixing bug 1939295 memory usage improved a lot, however gmail still looks like it is using lot of memory (and sometimes also CPU usage).
After just a few hours, having two different gmail sessions opened (with more than 1 tab for each session), I see in in about:processes 3 groups of gmail Tabs (each group is called https://google.com), with these memory usage:
- 998 MB
- 899 MB
- 660 MB
Fixing this would improve Firefox resources usage a lot for many users (gmail is usually always active).
Thanks.

saschanaz, maybe this is related to bug 1939295?

This is kind of whimboo's ongoing issue with gmail dating back to 2013, so I don't think it is necessarily related. Comment 25 was probably bug 1939295 given the symptoms and the timing.

Let's just close this for now. Whimboo can reopen it if they are seeing it again, though I don't think this is really actionable with just about:memory logs.

This issue is still present and I can see it basically every day. Today I had to run an update of Nightly (about 10h ago) and now with normal usage of Gmail the content process uses 500MB again.
