There are a few talos tests with a dot in the name, e.g., chrome.2. We currently publish these with a routing key that includes "chrome.2", which will break any regex that expects the testname to be a single word in the key. We should publish these with a routing key of "chrome_2" instead.

Is it better (or acceptable?) to translate chrome.2 -> chrome_2 where there is not necessarily a reverse translation? (i.e. is chrome_2 -> chrome_2 or chrome.2?) or should the '.' be escaped in a way where they can be definitively untranslated?

e.g. chrome.2 -> chrome.2 or chrome%2e2 etc

Yes, escaping them is a better method.
