Another Softonic, Conduit toolbar, search hijacker silent install. The repetition is getting tedious.

Adding ChatZum support. We had a discussion around this on bug 716092, but that was before our Add-on Guidelines.

Guys, we need you to review our guidelines (https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Addons/Add-on_guidelines) and make sure your add-on is compliant in every way. Particularly, it seems that it is bypassing our third-party install screen, and not following our settings modification guidelines. We need you to reply as soon as possible, or your add-on may be blocked again.
Jorge,

the Chatzum installer has been updated to comply with Google Feb 1st rules,

i suggest you check it on www.chatzum.com

the version only installs in the browser it was downloaded from, if it cant find the one it ran from, it runs on default browser, but in general its on the downloaded browser.

user need to select to opt in and install the chatzum toolbar (meaning that by default we do not check the boxes)

for uninstallation - we do even beyond google specifications and uninstall not only the toolbar but also the search properties, newtab and keyword.url
also the uninstaller button on the toolbar itself runs the uninstallation process typically only done from the control panel.

i suggest you download and check the install.

as for the conduit thing, we do not work with conduit, not install conduit toolbar, maybe that was some other bundle in softonic?

as you know we work with multiple distribution channels, and do our best to audit them and make sure they comply with the distribution rules.
as far as we know softonic comply with the offer screen rules where they need the user to read, agree and install.
with that said this ID is our toolbar class ID so we will check with softonic what is going on, also if you have the package of installer that making the issue please send it to me.

as you could also see, there have been almost 0 complains about chatzum since we updated our installer, so lets get to the bottom of this issue before suspending chatzum on mozilla.

Thanks,
Joe.
Thanks for getting back to us, Joe.

Bottom line is, you add-on needs to follow the guidelines I linked to in comment #1. That means that in the install process the user *must* see the screen shown in this blog post: https://blog.mozilla.org/addons/2011/08/11/strengthening-user-control-of-add-ons/. Either your installer or Softonic's is bypassing this screen, and we can't allow it.

Please get back to us when you get to the bottom of this.
Jorge,

Softonic are based in Barcelona, they are already closed for the weekend,
will update mid next week.

i do have a question about the guidelines, why does the user needs to have double approval if he needs to opt in to the installation?

Joe.

That's okay.

We don't require double approval, we just require approval on our side. Whether you want to display an opt-in or opt-out or nothing in your installer is entirely up to you. We only require an opt-in in Firefox so users understand what's happening.
Jorge, we are in the process of taking with softonic,
But all our addons were Disabled, can you please check?
I though we had an understanding that you will provide us some time
To go thru this.
Please help.
Joe
Chatzum hasn't been blocked yet, see https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/blocked/
I'll update a screenshot, maybe someone is using our class ID
We don't currently have any blocks which match your add-on ID.
We have asked Softonic to suspend distribution on Mozilla Firefox,
it should be in place on Tuesday 10pm PST.
we are continuing to review what exactly they have done.
Joe.
Can someone please confirm that this issue has been fixed now?
Closing this. Please reopen if the problem persists.
