When visiting www.smh.com.au the homepage works correctly, however when clicking on a link to a story or other page the browser begins to open the page, the heading appears in the title bar of the terminal, but then the browser hangs. There is no progress in the animated mozilla window and if I move to another desktop and then back there is only garbage on the screen. Killing mozilla or the java_vm is the only way to stop mozilla. I first noticed this problem in the nightly builds around two weeks ago. I am using the java plugin and Shockwave Flash plugins. The same page works without the java plugin installed.

Well it's definitely not an NT problem for me! But it would definitely seem to be a java problem as I have no trouble without the java plugin. I have the same problem on cvs from the trunk and with 0.9.1....
Confirming with a linux CVS build frmo 20010607. The same little applet is supposed to work on the story pages as well, but instead moz hangs before it starts animating. Only some of page loads before the hang. Low CPU.

This is another lazy loading problem. If you wait for the main home page to load completely before clicking on another link, it works ok, but if you just click on another link right away, it hangs. Re-assigning to Patrick Beard, author of the Lazy Loading fix.

I get hangs at various sites when java plugin is installed (0.9.2 - Linux). Without the plugin I get no hangs. I do not think it is a lazy loading problem. When I visit a site which causes a hang it will not come out of it even if I wait for the load (20 minutes long enough?). I also end up with hung java_vm processes. A "kill -9" will not kill them. To clean up the hung processes I need to reboot.
The same behaviour continues in the latest 0.9.3 builds (Linux). Loading a page which causes java_vm to start hangs the browser; loading these same pages without the java plugin causes the get-the-plugin popup, but no hang. Choosing the lesser of 2 evils, but it's slightly preferable to lose content/function at some sites, than to have those sites completely freeze all browser windows.
I cannot reproduce this bug with Mozilla 0.9.3 (Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:0.9.3+) Gecko/20010827) on Linux 2.2.14-12smp. I try to load url and do not wait while it completely load and try to click link and browser correctly loads another url.
Seeems to be much better with 0.9.3. I haven't noticed this behaviour since upgrading, but I might just be lucky so far...
With latest build (Mozilla/5.0 X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:0.9.3+ Gecko/20010828), if I try to go to http://java.sun.com/ the browser locks up solid. Doesn't matter if I follow a link to get to a java page, or type a URL directly; doesn't "seem to" matter if I wait for a page to finish loading or not. If I stumble onto a page that has embedded java content, my browser is toast, and I have to kill it from the command line.
OK I take it back, my java seems to be only half working, my about:plugins says that it is installed but I just get loading java applet. This is probably the reason it works for me now!
Has anybody managed to produce some stack crawls that show where the hang is occurring?
Reassigning to default module owner. Can anybody still reproduce this bug?

Patrick, I still can reproduce this on linux redhat 6.2 (2001-12-11-08-trunk). 1. Type this url:http://www.smh.com.au 2. Click on the image on the top right corner. 3. It crashes. I will attach the talkback report. I think the server is currently down. There's no crash on windows 98 though.
WFM on RH 7.1 with CVS trunk build form 20020211 for JRE 1.3.1
patty: can you please clarify how did you reproduce the crash? Site works for me (RedHat 7.1, recent trunk build). Also i was unable to find any java stuff there.
