To reproduce open a new page with File->New Navigator Window, then, in the new page, hit ^W. Nothing happens. I think the problem is that by default the location bar takes the focus, because its cursor is blinking. Clicking into the [empty] rendering field takes that focus away and ^W works. I use focus-follows-mouse mode.
While editor-fields have focus, ctrl+W is the key command to "delete word from end of line". Furthermore: Location bar having focus on newly opened windows is - i believe - a feature. Users who have opened a new window will usually wish to write someting in the urlbar, not close the window again right away.

this is a dupe of the accelerators-don't-work-while-urlbar-is-focused bug, wherever that may be
There is related bug 37638: "URL bar is given focus by default" with comments and some discussion about desired behaviour. The ctrl+W issue is mentioned. Then there is bug 71497: "URL bar in new window loses focus" - which seems to partly contradict the first bug. To obscure it all, there's an issue with autocomplete in bug 82787.
can we resolve this as silly? what's the point? * If you have your browser set to load your home page when you create a new window then ^W should close it. * If you have your browser set not to load a page when you create a new window then the most likely activity is typing a url. Can you give a reason that you would actually want to type ^N^W (or by some more complicated means open a new blank window and then close it)?

Well, it's definitely a dup of something. My favorite is bug 75685, which timeless marked a dup of bug 72352. I will follow his lead. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 72352 ***
