Details
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:17.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/17.0
Build ID: 20130307074601
Steps to reproduce:
(I'm using Firefox 17.0.4 esr.)
Typing after slash sign (/) in address bar, when history has more than about 20000 records, and when address bar configured to propose links from history or (and) bookmarks. Non-observance of any of condition described above make all work just fine.
The bug is not depend of any extensions installed (program was reinstalled too).
Actual results:
Slowing of computer and strange sounds from HDD, when I typing after slash sign (/) in address bar. The HDD make strange sound on each symbol, when I type after "/".
I think, it probably happen because of non-optimized query to history database.
Expected results:
Computer should not get slow, and it's HDD should not make this sounds.

try a full check with this add-on
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/places-maintenance/
That said, any strange sound from the hard disk is hardly related to software, could be it's near its end-of-life, so worth checking your hardware regardless.

My HDD is fine.
I'll try your add-on later.
