... and despite the cliche, we do in fact need some badges, to be hosted on mozillians and awarded for community contributions. I'd like to reward:
- Files a bug
- Triages a bug
- Finds a regression range
- Submits a patch for review
- Reviews a patch
- Mentors a bug
- Gets commit access (Level 1, 2, 3)
- Patch checked in to the tree
- Product w/ your patch ships.
- Becoming a module owner or peer
As well as:
- Files a patch against a bug more than a year old.
- Files a security bug the Right Way
- Fixes a security bug The Right Way
- Files an advocacy bug
A bunch of these already exist for the webdev side of things - https://www.flickr.com/photos/tags/webdevbadges/ - and I'd like to keep the same general hexagonal motif, if we can, while sticking with more firefoxy colors and simple iconography.
I'll attach some sketches to this shortly.
Thanks very much,
- mhoye

Thanks Mike. What kind of timing do you have in mind for this? I have some options in mind, but that might determine our next step.

I would like them fast and good, but also cheap. Does that help? I bet it totally does.
More seriously if I could get, say, the first four - files, triages, finds-regression and submits patch - quite promptly (A week or so?) that would be a great starter set. And none of this stuff is carved in stone, we can revisit the artwork if we need to, and add more badges as time and inspiration permit.
One other thing that would streamline the process for our future badge-designing needs is a relatively spare template, so that I or other submitters could have a way to colour inside the lines while trying to convey the image in their heads, even if it's just a hexagon with rounded corners.
Thanks!

Also! Could I get this back in the first month of Q2?
Thanks.
Hi Mike, I've attached a blank template and some very rough icons that you could use to make the badges in the short-term until John makes some nicer ones. I used the Mozilla sandy colours and kept the shape.

I don't see the icons attached; love the proposals for triage and regression-range finding, though, and I've got enough here to start with that large badge template.
Thanks!
Thanks Mike, I've added the template and icons as vectors (AI and EPS zipped)

Jedidiah, thanks for providing these templates. Are there any restrictions on how these can be used?
We have also contacted a designer to see if he is available to take this on. I should have more information by the end of the week.
Thanks!
Jennifer

Hi Jennifer, if you mean restrictions in terms of license no restrictions from me, use them and alter them as you like.
If you mean technically I don't think so, other than the drop shadows are raster based so would need to be rendered again if you scale them up.

Thanks, Jedidiah. I was talking about usage :)

The first four badge designs. Feedback is much appreciated. Size as displayed is 90px by 90px.
Looking for input on color and clarity, in particular.
I'll post the remaining badges as they are completed in the coming days.
Thanks,
David Smiley

Thanks for posting these, David.
Mike, John... what do you think?
Comment 17•12 years ago

I think this is a great start, thanks David. Really glad to have you on this project.
One note is that the patch one looks more like a band-aid...I don't think that metaphor necessarily works, but let's see what Mike says.
Mike, how are these for you?

Looking good David, <nitpick>I think they would sit a bit nicer if you made the red keyline a neutral colour like the one on the left. I'm guessing it is just the orange from the background bleeding through?</nitpick>

Thanks for the input everyone.
John, I can see why the band-aid wouldn't be the best metaphor now that you mention it! I'll come up with something more appropriate.
Jedidiah, got the keyline fixed and it's looking much better.
Also, I've done some research but I'm still not too familiar with a couple of these concepts. So, if anyone has any ideas for visual metaphors off the top of their heads that would be really useful! If not, I'll see what I can come up with and then work from there.
In particular:
"Becoming a module owner or peer" and "Gets commit access"
Thanks,
David Smiley

Top of my head brain dump;
Getting commit access means you have permission to make changes, it shows a level of trust, so maybe something like a key or sheriff badge. It could get more ornate with each level [1,2,3].
Getting a patch approved: a bundle or box with an 'accepted' stamp or tick, scales, thumbs up, Brick
Becoming a module owner or peer: a crown, a baby, shepherds crook, steering wheel
They are tricky ones, especially keeping the metaphors consistent as a set. Hope something sparks. Good luck.

Sorry for the long wait! Been in completely over my head between work and starting grad school. I'm in the clear for a bit now and I've got a bunch of new badges for you. Still working on ideas for those last few tacked on at the end there.
Let me know what you think and if anything needs changing.

These look great, thanks David. The only one that gives me pause is the mentor a bug one. Does anyone else think that one is a little unclear?

I think the mentoring one looks fine to me. Hug a bug today!
So, if I can get each of these badges broken up into their own files - PNGs on transparent backgrounds, I think please? - I'm thinking this one's in the bag. I have other badges I'll need art for soon, but I'll bundle them together about a dozen at a time and file them as another bug.
All of these look great, again, just in case my habit of expressing my approval with animated gifs was unclear.

Hi David,
It looks like we're all set, if you can add the final art files for the badges.
Thanks!
Jennifer
