I've noticed this happen to me a few times now, basically I type something in to the search bar, press enter and nothing happens at all, no error is displayed in the error console.

I'm forced to type google.com in to the url bar and go the long route.
Hey Erik,
* Can you try setting the browser.search.log pref to true and see if there's anything interesting going on at startup or when the problem happens?
* Are you using the default Google search engine?
* When did this start happening?
* Any enabled add-ons that could cause this?

STR would be great if you can figure out some pattern.

Sometimes this issue appears when the profile has been "infected" by an adware/hijacker like Conduit. Try to remove the pref for the search bar, in addition try with a new profile (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles).
Flags: needinfo?(evold)
I think I noticed this while testing add-ons on fresh profiles once or twice, and I don't think that I have noticed it on my main profile. I don't think the add-ons had anything to do with the search bar, they did use the sdk tho.

what pref?
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:22.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/22.0
20130618035212
I couldn't reproduce the issue.
I performed stress testing (opened 40+ tabs, search after different search strings, search right after the browser was opened, also used different search engines, etc.)

Unfortunately we never got enough information to reproduce this, or debug it further.
