Assigning to Matt.

Can I get more detail on the Shakespeare one? It seems a little goofy compared to the rest of them.

Sure, what can I tell you? It is a bit more goofy, but it's US only, and "Talk like a Pirate Day" went gangbusters on social last time. We thought we'd also participate in Talk Like Shakespeare Day (yes, it's an official day) to capitalize on the fun/goofy stuff on Facebook.

Anything else I can say to help?
Thanks Carmen. In that case, let's enlist Matej to come up with a better quote. Would be nice if we could take an actual Shakespeare quote and apply it to Firefox. "To browse or not to browse"...something like that.
+1 on Matej coming up with a better quote. I'll leave the status update the same to engender the likes and the Shakespeare talking :) But I like the idea of To browse or not to browse (or whatever genius is sparked)

Matej - could we make the copy due, say Monday or Tuesday next week (let me know if we need to IRC or call)? Or you tell me. :) Want to make sure Matt has enough time, too.

I'm envisioning a picture of Shakespeare wearing a Firefox button or something like that...
It's late. And I'm still at the office. So I wrote a sonnet. And... yeah.

If Firefox your fav'rite browser be
And time ye idly pass in Facebook's thrall
Upon this April day marked twenty-three
Converse you shall in verse upon this wall

A metered stanza is the very thing
Of trochees, dactyls, spondees, anapaests
Bereft of rhyme 'tis cheated of the ring
That iamb's foot dost step and march to best

In comments, likes, instead of LOLs
In captioned photos of your feline friends
And should you wonder the occasion, well
Allow us now to cordially extend

To every fan an invite in this way
To join us all in Talk Like Shakespeare Day
Flags: needinfo?(Mnovak)
Just jumping in to say, wow, that was awesome.
I propose that *all* marketing copy in all channels be written in verse from now on. We won't explain it or comment on it at all...we'll just start doing it. Sound good?

That aside, Carmen, what do you think? The poem itself is awesome, obviously, but is it too long?
'Tis indeed an awesome sonnet. :)

Is it too long? I guess you'd have to tell me (or the designer would) if it's going to look too long in a 403x403

At the very least, I think the first paragraph of ye old sonnet would be sufficient on a graphic.

C
Thanks all. I had a lot of fun writing it.

Matt, do you think it would fit in that space? I was thinking it could look like the frontispiece of an old book, with a big drop cap at the beginning.
First off, awesome! I enjoyed reading it, and I think it's unique enough that people would be engaged to read it in full. I am going to get started on working in the 403x403 space and see what I can do...I think Mataj's idea of using the drop cap or highlighting the first sentence in size/prominence to draw you in will add a nice visual touch to it.
Tried to keep this as close to a Shakespearean look as possible, with a few subtle branding elements as well...let me know you think.
This is amazing!
I have been a part of many great things at Mozilla, but this may be the greatest yet. Looks awesome, Matt!
I like the treatment a lot. I'm wondering if we could use just the First paragraph and closing line?

I certainly don't want to be the one to tell Matej Shakespeare Jr. ;) to edit himself, but my humble opinion is that there is a bit much text on that graphic for a Facebook status post. (or we need a bigger graphic - but Facebook isn't taking my calls on that anymore)

It is a great sonnet, but not quick-hit enough for the medium.

(ducks as people throw tomatoes at her) ;)

Thoughts?
I definitely knew that would be a possibility when I wrote it. If there's even a chance it might do well without angering the Facebook gods, I'd obviously love to run it whole, but if we need to cut it, here's what I would suggest:

If Firefox your fav'rite browser be
And time ye idly pass in Facebook's thrall
Upon this April day marked twenty-three
Converse you shall in verse upon this wall

Allow us to invite you in this way
To join us all in Talk Like Shakespeare Day

It would also be good if the last two lines were offset (i.e. indented) or treated a little differently in that case so they serve as the payoff to the first four.

Also, if that's what we decide to do, would it be OK with everyone if I posted the whole thing on the Creative blog on that day with a link to our Facebook page?

That sounds like a great solution to me.
Matej,

I would TOTALLY be okay if you posted it on the creative blog.

I sadly suggest that we cut it - using your suggestion above. It hurts me deeply as I type it.

But even cut down, it's still a great thing!
Similar setting to the first version, but a little more breathing space with the reduced copy...actually enough so , that it needed the top to be filled in...so I added the 'Firefox' title...but if you feel there is something that would be a better lead in, won't be a problem to change.
Hi Matt,

Even with the reduced copy, my concern is that the text size is still to small to read (think about seeing the original image on a mobile device, and there needs to be enough clearly readable to see to click and enlarge.)

Can we keep the same cool treatment, but remove the title and just make all of the text a larger size?
Matt, let's see what we can do to get the text size up.

Unfortunately it looks like we're running into the limitations of the box width. Even if we only had two lines there would still be a maximum size they could be, but let's see what Matt comes up with.
This is about as big as we can make the copy in order to keep the same line structure of the sonnet.

Muuuuuuch better. :)
Hey Matt. How are you doing with the non-sonnet images here?
Hey John, I'm hoping to have something to share later today!

MT
Hi Matt!

Thanks for these.

So this first comment is entirely my bad. I'm just realizing that with the news about Gary stepping down, we probably don't want to highlight a quote from him. *smacks head* Let's park that one for now.

The "No one ever" graphic - John, maybe you can help with some direction? Matt, we're just starting to work on a social media styleguide, and we're just getting insight on some of these things. This graphic is an orange logo graphic. We have a lot of orange logo graphics (blue logo graphics, green logo graphics, etc.) I think one of the things we want to steer away from is graphics that all look alike (because if you see the same kind of graphic all the time, you start to ignore them.)

I'd like to see the "no one ever" graphic have it's own style (because the concept will repeat again in May), but not necessarily a "brand" graphic. Did you see the inspiration graphic from Oreo? Yes, they have a different product, but I'm wondering if it might help us think here.

Oreo https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151340822949653&set=a.124804629652.101377.114998944652&type=1&relevant_count=1

I have the same comment on the stylized quote. Can we put the quote over a photograph instead of the same brand-type image we've been using so much? Again, maybe John might have some great design input here.

Also, let's remove the "share if you agree" line - we'll make that the status update.

If we only have time to put our energies into one, I'd like us to rethink the No One Ever graphic. I know we'll use the concept again, and I really think that one can give us a big bang for our buck.

Here are some other inspiration graphics for No One Ever

Thanks Matt, thanks Carmen.

Re: 'no one ever', I think Carmen's thoughts above are on the right track. Would definitely like to avoid using our standard color palette or the Firefox logo with this one, b/c we want to make it clear that we're not the ones actually saying that rather outrageous statement.

Unfortunately, visualizing something like companies selling your private information is a challenge (it's less tangible than Oreos, for example). I wonder if an image that conveys spying or invading your privacy in some way could work? Am sort of riffing off the alarm clock example shown above.

If that's not coming together, I think an appropriately in your face type treatment would also probably do the trick.

Thanks!
Hi Carmen and John,

Thanks for the feedback, I realize I was way off track here, but get where you're going with these now. They can almost be treated as their own identity, similar to how the meme generator has its own defined look using the impact font. So technically there is no need for any Firefox branding, ie logos on this?
That sounds correct to me.
This one is very type driven, going for a bold look, and a way to make it interesting to read. The character at the top is just an additional element...it could work without this as well. Let me know what you think of this style!

Matt
Hi Matt,

I like this one much better. :)

Question:

Should we somehow put the Firefox logo small in the corner or something, so when someone shares, they know that Firefox is their option for a browser which doesn't do this?

Concern:

This text style is going to be super hard for me to add localized text to. Usually, I can tell what words fit where, but with so many text differences, I'm not sure that I'll have a direct word correlation in each language (German has more words, Greek has fewer, for example.) Any thoughts on that? Maybe we have a localized version for the non-EN locales that has less stylization? (is that even a word?) :)
Great!

As for adding the Firefox logo, that won't be a problem... I am thinking I can place it in the bottom left corner and have the 'No one ever' moved to the right.

I can understand your concern when it comes to l10n. This style of type is basically based off of a formula...keeping all the copy squared on both sides...the size of each line can be altered to ensure that it is squared. Although you'll see in some instances 'to be able to' I've used lines on either side to give the illusion of a squared textline. But I realize this will still require enough tailoring to suit the needs of each language. Maybe I can give an alternate version which has less variations in the copy, but still the same setting and colour palette?

Variation on v2...this one should be a bit more l10n friendly.

Thanks Matt. Maybe make the Firefox logo smaller in the NoOneEver one? And add it to the wordmark in the stylized quote?

These are looking good though!
These are looking great, Matt. Sorry to weigh in late, but how would you feel about this change to the privacy one:

"I want companies to track my every move online and sell that information to make money." — No one ever

As it is, I'm missing the "I" or "my" portion of the message.
Thanks guys, I've taken your feedback into account and posted update versions.

Looks good, you just lost the word "online" in the privacy one. Thanks.
oops, good catch.

Looking good, thanks Matt!
Thanks Matt,

we opened a new bug for this graphic, but John suggested we add it here.

We are approaching 15 million Facebook fans. We need a 403x403 graphic to accompany text that would be something like: "15,000,000 fans! Thanks for all the thumbs up. We like you too!"

We are hoping not to localize the graphic, so we don't want text on it. Our vision is to design the graphic in symbols:

Image of Firefox / logo
The like button on Facebook or the thumbs up symbol
A hand pointing at the user

The image--through symbols--would spell out "Firefox likes you."

If possible, can we have this by the 25th of April? We've done an ad spend and we're approaching the 15,000,000 fan mark faster than expected. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Matt, if you could send me the PSD files for the no one ever and the stylized text graphic?

Also, the link to the font you used so I can download it. (Is it League Gothic? For some reason, I've had trouble getting that font to work on another project with Lee)
Hi Carmen,

Here is a link to the PSDs along with the fonts used in each. The font used is
Futura bold condensed not League Gothic...let me know if you have any problems with it...otherwise I can find a similar alternative.

Also with regards to the newest 403x403 graphic request...I should be able to get that to you before the 25th...hoping to set aside some time today to work it out.

Cheers,
Matt
Hi Matt,

So we reached 15 million fans a day earlier than I calculated (not a bad problem to have)

So if you could get us that image sooner rather than later, it would be awesome. And if we still get it by COB tomorrow, it's not a crisis. Just thought I'd put a bug in your ear.
Hi Carmen, this is half in the works, hoping to have it completed shortly. One thing I wanted to ask about, is whether or not you would be open to replacing the icon of the hand pointing at the screen with a FB avatar silhouette? Two reasons, the hand pointing at screen is hard to pull off in an iconic form, also, visually it would be nice to change it up from using two hands in a row. I was thinking it could be Firefox logo + FB thumbs up icon + FB generic avatar silhouette. Let me know what you think of this idea.

Thanks,
Matt
Hi Matt,

To me, the avatar silhouette doesn't make it personal. We're trying to say that we love our fans and we thank them for the 15 million likes. It's all about YOU! :)

We were thinking of an icon like this
http://www.m3group.biz/blog/www.m3group.biz/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/you12.jpg

Does that help? Or, we can do a collage of fan pics on the right hand side?
I see what you're saying. I can try working from the example you gave me. Can we get away with not using the FB specific thumbs up and go for a more generic look?
If the thumb looks really funny (it ties it back to facebook fans, though), we could use a heart icon, or the text version

Attached image April_403x403_FB_post_FFLikesYou (obsolete) —
Going pretty simple and straight forward with this. Another idea to fill space could be to repeat the line to create a 'wallpaper' effect.
I like the single instance. :)

Can you put a soft background color on it? Facebook's background is white, so I'm concerned that a white image "floats" the design and looks odd.

Other than that, good to go.
Hi Carmen, I've attached an updated version of the FF Likes You, using a soft grey background. I think this will give it enough contrast from the white but still neutral enough for the 3 icons.
