The developer should ask you for logfiles soon.
In case that he doesn't show up in a week or so you should download the full .dmg of Firefox19 from Mozilla.org.
Component: Untriaged → Application Update
Product: Firefox → Toolkit

Henry, are you still experiencing this issue? Where did you downloaded the installer for Firefox 18 from?

thank you for replying to my question- I am relatively inept at software manipulation. I still get the message to download the upgrade and when I do, the computer keeps trying for 15 minutes and then I get a message that it cannot find the update in staller- by the way, what IS an update instaler? I realize it is software- I do not think I ever encountered one or downloaded one. please advise- you lead and I will follow. henry

Henry, please install the latest released version from:
http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/products/download.html?product=firefox-20.0&os=osx&lang=en-US
(load the above link and save the installer - the dmg file. Double click on it, and drag it to the folder image with the "A" on it. Click "Yes" when asked to replace the old version).
Please let me know, when the next release is available, if you are still receiving the "Cannot reach update notification".
I have the exact same problem. The updater is visualy running but doesn't do anything.
Macbook Pro early '11
OS 10.7.5 - Not using an admin account.
Firefox (had it with 18->19, 19->20) 20 -> 21
German Mac, german lion, german Firefox. Installed from official Mozilla server.
If the updater pops up, I click on 'install update'. The update-bar starts to move but resets to itself, as if the animation has e.g. 10 pictures, but it only runs to picture 5 and starts all over again.
The updater is contacting the server - but that's all. Nothing happens. It's trying to reach it, for the end of the day without any notice or error message.
Unfortunately I clicked it away for today, so I cant start it again and look into the logs of the OS.
The KnowledgeBase (https://support.mozilla.org/de/kb/firefox-auf-die-letzte-version-aktualisieren) states that I can run the update manually through "Firefox->About Firefox". But instead of installing it there, it just says: "Update ready on firefox.com".
"Install Firefox Updates automatically" is checked in the settings update-tab. Obviously it doesn't install it autmatically; only searches for updates.

Sorry for not figuring this out and with how old this is I'm going to resolve it as incomplete. If you can still reproduce please file a new bug. Thanks!
