I think this has been raised many times (I am pretty sure there are multiple duplicates), and everyone agrees that this is something that deserves some work. However, I think everyone agrees too we cannot do it for v1.0.1 at this moment. tef- because of that.
Adding some UX guys to the loop just in case they want to add anything.

Nominating this for leo as it's been reported many times including in the feedback from Telefonica's internal dogfooding program (see the dev-b2g and dev-gaia mailing list thread titled: "Feedback from Telefonica internal dogfooding program").
Looking at screenshot 2013.06.04-Tiny.Nav.Menu.Calendar.Expanded.png you can see that the nav menu is actually wider than it appears before it's used. The button size in that screenshot looks much more reasonable than what's currently rendered.

Adding UX to review if there is anything we can do for the back button layout

Reassigning from the general UX identity to Francis, to see if there's anything we can do to improve the layout and button size. UX is working on improved patterns and wireframes for the back button and back stack, but this bug needs to be addressed before that work is completed (this is leo).

This is not a blocker, will be reworked by UX in upcoming versions to properly address the issue(s).

This issue has been raised as a work item for the Systems Components team for koi and onwards, so is not blocking leo.

FWIW, I don't think that just making the button bigger is enough -- it's hard to reach it one a bigger phone with just one hand (In my case it's the "peak"). Having such important navigation buttons (duplicated) on the bottom would really help (like you have in android).
