Thunderbird 17.5 intermittently does not respond for 30 sec. or so under Mac 0S X 10.6.8.

Steps to reproduce:
Start up TB.
Actual results:
Without warning TB hangs, the pinwheel comes up, and "Thunderbird not responding" shows up in the Activity Monitor. See the screen shot in the attachment. However, it is consuming a large % of the CPUs.

Expected results:
TB should not stop responding. After a time, TB begins responding again and the CPU usage drops. See the second screen shot in the attachment.
What would be helpful is to at least find out what TB is doing when it is not responding.
Can you look in tools->activity manager? Also tools->error console ?
