We're redesigning the Mozillians.org homepage in Q2 and are hoping to go to code prototypes in the next week or so. Sean volunteered to put together some mockups of the logged out/in homepage using Julia's sketches as the basis; he thought it might be possible to do this week. Most recent sketches: * Logged out: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/attachment.cgi?id=728253 * Logged in: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/attachment.cgi?id=731873 Feedback on those sketches: * https://mozillians.etherpad.mozilla.org/homepage-redesign-2013-04-02 Note: * Right to left, left to right text are likely * Accessibility of final interfaces is important

There was some talk in IRC this morning about mobile views. We will want a good experience on small screens; if you offer guidance on that, great! If not we'll improvise.

Thanks Justin. Agreed that having mobile specs would be great. Unfortunately, in order to keep Sean's involvement to a reasonable scope (he's fitting this in between FxOS launch projects) he won't be able to do that work. Is it possible for Julia to do the mobile info based on Sean's visual design template?

Howdy, we'd like to move ahead with this. Sean, are you too deep in other work to jump in here? If so, what about... * we treat your earlier mockup (http://cl.ly/image/3w3Z1P0x1I07) as a style guide, laying its visual design on our sketches * we reach out to you with specific questions when we run into elements that don't flow easily from that mockup * we have a review with you before launching Thanks!

We'll move forward with the above plan starting 4/23. Please ping if another approach is better!

Hey all, I've been playing around some more with the sketches and here's where I am on the logged out state: http://cl.ly/image/1924043V1g16/o More to come tomorrow (including reasoning behind some things), just wanted to share where I'm at.

I like just about everything about that, it looks really good. I have one minor comment to watch the contrast level on the text on the right/left sides(and any similarly coloured text) as it looks like it might be insufficient, other than that I think this is going in an awesome direction. Thanks for the quick look!

Yes, I'm going to be testing the contrast ratios. It's secondary elements on the side, so was playing with levels of color. My thought would be it'd become the same level of color on hover - weighting content with contrast is something I've been playing around with but keeping in mind it should be able to be brought up to high contrast on interaction with the element. I can be swayed to just have it all high contrast, but I'd like to see what could be done to separate it like this if possible.

Sean/John, it's great! I set up a meeting Monday morning for our team to discuss before jumping in to code. I invited Sean who said he might attend to offer guidance WRT interactivity and responsiveness. That would be very helpful. Thanks for putting this together! Can't wait to click on it :)

Designs looks really great! I have one comment about search & browsing hierarchy on the signed-in page. It's a little bit picky, but I think it will take this one step further. If we think searching and browsing the functional areas are the 2 main actions on the page, I would make this even more apparent. Right now page actions and tertiary content have similar hierarchy. It might be nice to lead the user to the actions they are likely to do first and make a conscious decision to bring out search and functional areas as 2 main entry points. One subtle way to do this is to center the search field within the left column and focus on it even more. Then it will be more prominent and clear that the 2 main actions within this column are 1) Search and 2) Browse Functional Areas. This would also make a clearer distinction between the left column being functional and the other 2 columns being informational. So that's a long way to say that I'd recommend centering search in the left column, make the field a little bigger, which will give equal weight and more focus on 2 main entry points into the content.

Awesome feedback, Holly, and definitely something we want to work on. We'll make some adjustments to that in code. Additional notes from our review of these designs are here: https://mozillians.etherpad.mozilla.org/homepage-redesign-2013-04-29
