Details
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.8; rv:22.0) Gecko/20130408 Firefox/22.0
Build ID: 20130408004015
Steps to reproduce:
got an email from a Thunderbird user asking me for a high-res version of some image. I sent it to him.
Actual results:
He answered: Thanks! In the answer email my large image was attached again re-sent back to me. That's a waste of bandwith and a waste of harddrive space. especially annoying when using mobile devices to read email.
Expected results:
the attachment should have been automatically scrubbed and replaced by something like <imagefilename.tiff> most other Mail Clients this works like that. Workaround seems to be to set Thunderbirds preference to text only mails. Then the attachments get scrubbed, but there is no reference to them any more. I'm not a Thunderbird user myself (yet) but as someone who corresponsd a lot with thunderbird users i really hope this gets fixed soon.

The Thunderbird user probably did something weird (e.g. forwarding the message back to you instead of replying), since Thunderbird already strips attachments when replying.

To test this i set up a Linux Mint amchine and i can confirm that attachments are being scrubbed when replied. However I have seen this behaviour with three different senders so far, all of which are Thunderbird users. I examined the Mails and they are replies, not forwards. I am quite sure there is / was a bug there, at least a usability issue.
Also scrubbed attachments don't show up like
<filename_of_attachment.jpg>
in the reply, so the information that there was an attachment is not preserved.

Is this user able to reproduce when using a newer version?

Wow, a bug I filed in 2013! Back then I was on Apple Mail, Now I am a Thunderbird/Linux user myself.
I have tried It now and can't reproduce it any more. However one issue still is there regarding attachments: When I reply to a message which has an attachment, IMHO there should be something in the quoted text, indicating that in the original message an attachment was present. I think that's valuable information that needs to be preserved just like text (but not sent back).
like <filename_of_attachment.jpg>
