From Bugzilla Helper: User-Agent: Mozilla/4.77 [en] (Win95; U) BuildID: 2001061504 Using Netscape 4.x when in normal mail mode weather it be imap or pop, pressing ctrl + k compresses/removes deleted from that folder. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Open mail 2. have an imap account where server setting says "when I delete a message" and option "mark it as deleted" 3. delete any mail 4. press ctrl + k Actual Results: The delete mark dissapear, but nothing more happens. According to the spec (http://mozilla.org/mailnews/specs/threepane/MailMenus.html), the File|Compact Folders menu item does not have an accelerator (i.e. ctrl+k). The idea is to conserve accelerators for functions that are performed frequently. I don't know how frequently users compact folders. I know that the New Message/Compose window and Composer use "ctrl+k" for the spell checker.
The spellchecker is not part of Mozilla, so that would be a bugscape bug.
I have seen in the newsgroups lately that people really want a shortcut for this. It's high gain, obviously. I'll attach a simple fix.
Mozilla may have a spell checker in the future, and if so, should use the same accelerator. In addition, Ctrl+K has already been suggested for something else. Please see bug 66884.
Anyone who works in the "When I delete a message: Mark it as deleted" mode will probably uses this often. Control-k currently does compact folder in Netscape Messanger 4.x, so using it in Mozilla would just be maintaining that behavior. Bug 66884 is asking for a new behavior.
Here's the current key mappings from communicator 4.x: http://help.netscape.com/products/client/communicator/qrc/msshrtpg.htm Compress Folder is Ctrl + K on windows and Alt + K on UNIX Forward Message is Ctrl + L on windows and Alt + L on UNIX The Mac platform does not have a Compress Folder short cut and maps accl + K to Forward message. Consistant shortcuts should be used on all platforms. Since a larger installed base (win + unix) uses K as Compress and L as Forward that standard should be adopted.
The whole argument about what Ctrl + k should do, is in different windows. What good is the spell check shortcut in the mailtree window? What good is the compact folder in the writing mail window? To me it seems like Ctrl + k have been used for "all the special features" not go give to many key versions or something like that. Getting down to point, I know my company is not going to give up NS 4.x as long as this simple thing isn't in the newer versions. Simply because the difference between using a shortkey or grabbing mouse clicking two times is a bigger difference then it sounds like.
Hi, we use the SuSE IMAP-Server-III. When I delete a message using 'mark as deleted' or 'move it to the trash' the message is only marked as deleted but still present on the server. This causes that my mailusers often reach their quotas and they ask me, how this can happen though they have explicit deleted the messages. In Outlook Express there is a menu entry 'Compact ALL folders'. This works but I hate Outlook Express. In Netscape-Mail 4.7x there was an option in the IMAP-settings for the server : 'Cleanup all folders on exit' I cannot find this option in Mozilla anymore. Created attachment 111183 [details] Work around to add control-k for compact folder Attachment to enable control-k for compacting folder
I use this frequently so Ctrl+K would be a nice shortcut for this feature. Compact folder should also be renamed to Purge.
If not build in an accelerator toolbar button for this function, at least pity the users and add a keycombo for it. (May I suggest CTRL-E, as in, "Expunge".) Single folder or all folders, doesn't matter to me. I simply prefer to mark messages as deleted and then manually expunge them from the current mailbox once I'm certain I've reviewed the changes. This is similar to behaviours in Mulberry and Evolution, albiet Evolution offers you the ability to "hide" messages marked as deleted. This feature would help immensely.
benj - Thanks for the workaround in comment 12. This should suffice in the meantime.
Is the workaround going to be checked in or are we going to wait for an actual solution?

I certainly use "compact folder" often enough that I would enjoy a keyboard shortcut. Control-K sounds good to me, Control-E is also fine. A button on the toolbar would also be a reasonable alternative.
I do compact folders OFTEN. I need a shortcut for that (both Mozilla and Thunderbird).
I am for WONTFIX for several reasons: * easily accessible via alt-f, f * easily accessible via context menu * I'd like to see ctrl-k become the standard key to access search functions (as in FF+TB) * performance hit of someone unintentionally compressing folders (esp if they hit ctrl-k on the entire account and not a single folder) * despite the geniune interest by commenters here, I doubt many people need this on a frequent basis (even daily does not constitute frequent) and for those that do a fully customizable solution is attached to this bug to provide the shortcut (In reply to comment #18) > I do compact folders OFTEN. I need a shortcut for that (both Mozilla and > Thunderbird). do you seriously think TPTB will approve this for Thunderbird? (I suggest there isn't the slightest chance) --> enhancement (this is not a bug)
Well, broken key assignments in FF/TB are no valid reasons for SM. :-P But I, too, don't see compacting folders as a task common enough to justify the assignment of one of our few precious shortcut keys.
Since I stopped using NN 4 so fricken long ago nwo that I've gotten out of the habit of pressing CTRL+K. Now I use the TB compact folders toolbar button extension. Which IMO should be built in to TB. As should the redirect mail extension. But that is another story. BTW, for IMAP users who have their mail set to "mark as deleted" like me, compacting folders (purging deleted messages) is something you do all the time. Sure for a POP3 user or someone who uses the trash can this is not something you do very often, but for us old school mark as deleted fans it is _very important_. Just because you don't use a feature regularly doesn't mean others do not. You can only make statements like that when you have quantitative metrics.
We don't have metrics for either claim... Since there _are_ users requesting/proposing this key, this bug exists - but we don't know how many may need it. But since we don't know how few will use it, the bug is still open. Currently, it's just not likely to be implemented.
Actually the feature requested in that case is "Expunge" (the IMAP command of the same name), that would actually quite match "Compact This Folder". It is way faster than "File" -> "Compact Folders". "Compact this folder" is only accessible with a contextual popup menu. While Thunderbird offer a really efficient keyboard navigation, this lack of keybinding for "Expunge" is really noticeable in day to day use. I do it several times a day. Actually my typical use case is read, delete / move / mark as spam, then "Compact This Folder". Evolution use Ctrl-E and I got annoyed by what Ctrl-E does in Thunderbird (habits die hard).
bug 127888 seems to be about the same things. Shouldn't we merge them in one single issue?
Bug 478380 is the same for Thunderbird with a patch.
