Build ID: 20130326150557

Steps to reproduce:

Set a default text colour in Thunderbird and email to Gmail.

The setting of a default text colour uses the bgcolor attribute which is depreciated in HTML4 and absent from HTML5. I must assume that Gmail have removed support for this attribute already.

Actual results:

Gmail does not display the coloured text.

If the text is set in the composer window, rather than as a default the text attribute fon color is recognized by gmail and the text is displayed correctly.

Expected results:

HTML should have rendered as it was composed.

The composer is producing html that is not HTML5 compliant and this needs to be updated.

The issue still exists in TB 102. The TB default text color isn't recognized by Gmail or Outlook.com

Magnus, it is 10 years since I filed this bug. Thunderbird still can not send an email using it's default font colour to gmail. Surely this is something that should no longer languish.

The composer is struggling and has been for more than a decade, and putting pretty link previews in it will not fix what is a dated interface and something that struggles with relevance once you turn on HTML composition.

There's perhaps no quick wins. First of all the composer needs to be able to use css for styling (bug 1790725). After that the inline styling may have to be of a certain type.

The severity field for this bug is set to S4. However, the following bug duplicate has higher severity:

:hsinyi, could you consider increasing the severity of this bug to S3?

Hi Magnus, does it sound reasonable to you if we move this issue to Thunderbird::Message Compose Window component?

Flags: needinfo?(htsai) → needinfo?(mkmelin+mozilla)

Let's do that. I'd think it's controllable for the application.

Component: DOM: Editor → Message Compose Window
Flags: needinfo?(mkmelin+mozilla)
Product: Core → Thunderbird
