User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:20.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/20.0 Build ID: 20130409194949 Steps to reproduce: Last date of Firefox Sync is several days old. Even after "sync Now" it does not update local bookmarks to server state. Actual results: When initiated, it takes some time and silently fails or it displays "sync encountered an error while syncing failed to connect to the server" at the bottom of browser window. In both cases, bookmarks nor history is not synced. (Note: I have set syncing only bookmarks and history in Preferences dialog.) Expected results: It should sync bookmarks and history. It should display recent date of last sync when howering on the sync symbol at the toolbar.

Probably the line Sync.Collection DEBUG mesg: GET fail 503 https://... is the point of the problem?

I am experiencing identical issue. For me, the issue started on the 9th of April 2013 when I upgraded from version 19 to version 20. Since 9th of April not a single successful sync.
The problem is gone. The reason was probably the server maintenance.
