User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:20.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/20.0
Build ID: 2013032900

Steps to reproduce:

I have been downloading an email via IMAP over STARTTSL. It is related to one specific email, that arrived twice. The email is some kind of spam.

Actual results:

Thunderbird started to use a lot of memory (computer was unusable) and after some 30 minutes it crashed with the message out of memory.

Expected results:

The email should have been downloaded and opened in the new message window.
I am running OpenSuse and the latest Thunderbird from their Mozilla reprository.
When I deleted these 2 emails via webmail all went OK.

There is no error report in about:crashes. The only thing I have is following line from /var/log/messages:
kernel: [27256.981230] Out of memory: Kill process 1331 (thunderbird-bin) score 523 or sacrifice child
That's unfortunately too generic to be useful...

If you open the message from File > Open Saved Message (from the "real" menu, not the application button; type ALT+F if you don't see it), does it hand and crash as well? If yes, it's not related to IMAP but to parsing of the message; if not, it may be an issue related to the IMAP protocol.

Also, can you try with Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled to see if the issue is reproducible in Thunderbird's Safe Mode?
