For bug 858994, we decided to make special "user-entered" URIs for pinned sites that are created with text manually entered in the awesomescreen (as opposed to selecting one of the items in the lists). When the user opens one of these pinned sites, we should update the pinned bookmark entry to store the real URL, as opposed to this special "user-entered" one. The major benefit of this would be that the pinned site would then have a real thumbnail. I'm not sure how this is going to interact with the new about:home design, but if we continue to let users pin random search text, this would still be a valid issue.
We're replacing the old Top Sites with Activity Stream (bug 1377247) and I *believe* users are no longer able to enter custom text and pin user-entered sites. While we should just go ahead and remove the workaround, this hack should really have been made at the DB level so that we don't forget to encode/decode the URLs it in the client code, such as bug 1382489.
