Different than 86733, please don't dupe ATM.

ID: {5911488E-9D1E-40ec-8CBB-06B231CC153F}

This Addon Does use about:newaddon, but it uses an opt-out (actually, two step opt-out) process to change personal settings upon install, and does not revert them upon removal. Changes Homepage and search engine to Bing (less bad than some custom crap-ad laden search engine, but still does not respect user sovereignty)
The developer (zugo, apparently) has been contacted.
There's a new version available that fixes the settings issues, according to the developer: http://about.startnow.com/

Please verify.

Nope. Installed Version 2.5 from about.startnow.com, still changes user settings using an opt-out dialog (and the settings are changed even if a user rejects the add-on at about:newaddon) and no settings are reverted upon uninstall. Search engine is now changed to Yahoo and Homepage to a custom startnow page. Still violates policy, still blocklist worthy.

Ah, so if you uninstall from the control panel Startnow will ask if you want to revert your settings, but they should still be doing that from inside the add-ons manager, and not changing settings before the add-on install is accepted anyway.

Hi,

I have been in email contact with Jorge regarding this bug but perhaps it is more conductive if I reply here directly.

As explained to Jorge, Zugo has not been distributing the StartNow toolbar for a considerable time. Any installs still happening will be of old installers still floating around the net or being on users' machines from the past.

According to Jorge the main issue raised here was the missing option to revert the search settings upon uninstall. Most of the toolbars we distributed already have this option but older ones exists which lack it. We have built an update and sent it to those older users which did not have the option revert the settings.

At this point almost all (except those not yet reached by the update) users with a StartNow toolbar will have the option to revert the search settings on uninstall.

The installer at about.startnow.com was meant as a demonstration for Jorge to check the uninstall process. If needed we can change it to opt-in but it is not actually being distributed anywhere.

Please let us know if this is sufficient to close this bug or if not, what further changes would be needed.

Markus, so if startnow is not being distributed (and the installer I tested still isn't properly removing Startnow settings) should we just blocklist Startnow? This is an add-on that is causing lots of users pain, with around 700K installs. Startnow should remove all settings when uninstalled from inside Firefox, it shouldn't require uninstalling from the control panel (although removing it from there should remove settings as well).

If I'm understanding you though, startnow is basically a dead product?

No, startnow is definitely not a dead product and I don't see why you would want to remove it from 700k people who obviously make use of it. If the requirement is that the extension uninstall from within firefox reverts the search settings we will look into implementing this and rolling out another update to users.

Also it would be helpful if you could provide us with any links or reports on the startnow toolbar causing lots of users pain. We have easy to find uninstall instructions and a support email address on the startnow.com page. The amount of complaints we get is quite low.

If it's not dead, how are new users getting these installs? If you are no longer distributing it, doesn't that mean it's dead?

Yes, the add-on needs to revert the settings from inside Firefox when it is uninstalled. This needs to either do this with no prompt from the users (so no dialog asking if they want to keep their settings or revert them) or a check box, unchecked by default, asking users if they want to keep startnow.

New users getting installs must be due to users having installers already or downloading them from somewhere outside our control. This means we can unfortunately not give them an updated version until after they installed the toolbar.

That we are no longer actively distributing it to new users does not mean the toolbar is dead. I would not consider a product with 700k users to be dead.

Very well, we will implement these changes.

A new version of the StartNow toolbar is available at http://about.startnow.com/
It will revert search settings when uninstalled from inside Firefox as well as from Control Panel.

We plan to send this out as an update to all users after the weekend.
Tyler, can you look at the latest version and let us know how it works?

Ok this version does revert settings, however it is still changing the search engine without user permission, and Before the about:newaddon dialog has been accepted.

Markus, please read the latest comment by Tyler. While we appreciate the improvement in the installer, there's still one thing left to do, which is to integrate the settings changes to the add-on instead of having the installer do this separately.

We have changed the installer and extension to only make the changes once the user has approved the extension for installation. The new version is available at http://about.startnow.com/
Tyler or Kris, can you please give this version of the installer a look?
