We say that we support 89 locales, but we removed 9 last week, so we should update the value in all pages.

Let's stick to the numbers that are given on the Firefox download page for future references/announcements of number of languages we ship in: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html

This fact is also used when announcing new locales added to Firefox in press and via release notes. We should simply state that they are part of the 70+ locales shipped regularly with Firefox, as it does on the download page. This number and form of expression was selected so as to not have to change the copy on the download page frequently.

Thanks,
Jeff
For the 15 years facts on the /contribute page, we'll also need to revise the percentage. Currently it reads:

Our global community has helped translate Firefox into 89 languages, making the browser available to more than 95% of the world's population.

So what should the corrected copy read? How about:

"Our global community has helped translate Firefox into over 70 languages, making the browser available to more than 90% of the world's population."

Is 90% good for the percentage?

I'm really not sure. I don't know where that number came from or how we generated it. Can anyone else advise?
Not sure if it helps, but when it comes to localizations and population coverage I usually think of Gerv (e.g. http://blog.gerv.net/2009/06/firefox_35_language_coverage/)
Yes, gerv provided the % based on the locales we had on the release Channel in March.

It would be good to have another snippet to translate that would remain relevant for the rest of the year because everytime we add a new localized version of the contribute page, we get one more spot to correct later for this string.
"Over 90%" is probably a safe statement; we've been over that figure for a long time now. Unless we have some sort of mass cull of non-niche languages, it's not going to change.

I've updated the copy in https://github.com/mozilla/bedrock/pull/863

@pascal: what's the next step to get this change ready for localizers?
The file is updated on trunk for all locales and the webdashboard shows that string as untranslated, they will commit to svn when they see it.

Bug 867985 - update number of locales

We went from 89 to 80 locales. Amending the text to "over 70" and "more than 90%" is vague enough to be accurate for the foreseeable future even as the specific number fluctuates.
