GLOBAL

Facebook Avatar for community members and global fans

Channel: Facebook/Twitter

Dimensions: 403x403 (The marriage Equality avatar was designed as a 403x403 image so it could be promoted as a status update on Facebook. Then people could share, with the key visual in the center so it scaled as an avatar, too)

WHO is the target? Firefox fans and Mozillians

WHAT is main thing you want to communicate or want people to do? Share the graphic, change their avatar

WHAT is the tone? Fun, celebratory, evangelistic

Messaging/CTA: Messaging would be a status update with the avatar, “celebrate with us” and download this Facebook avatar. We're going to encourage our community members / fans to change their Facebook avatar to a Firefox OS image during launch week (or month)

Graphic elements required: Something with a quick visual of Firefox OS, no text

Deadline: May 20

John, Michaela and I (and John's choice of designer) have a brainstorm meeting next week to talk about how this should be put together. More details TK.

Thanks Carmen, this should probably be related to the Twitter avatars, right? https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=862993

Hey Tara - good question.

I would say they are 2 different things - the visual for bug 862993 should be for the community Twitter pages (like Firefox_GR), I was thinking a Firefox logo - whatever we have on the EN page - with the ability to say "Greece" or "Spanish" or whatever to customize those.

For this bug, the visual something that we would encourage on personal Twitter accounts globally, to show support for Firefox OS.

Does that help?

facebook social avatar - flame 01

Posting 2 iterations of a possible social avatar graphics here.

- simple close-up of flame
- full fox pose

Challenge here is what this will look like scaled down to avatar size vs. 403x403 px graphic.

Also, John wants to run these by Pete, hoping it's not too much of a brand violation (ie: not including a phrase or logo lockup)

Hey all. I just showed these to Pete and we were both feeling like neither quite hit the mark. The flame one doesn't feel super Firefoxy, and the fox one is hard to read at avatar size (also, to follow our own rules, it really needs the logo with it, which isn't feasible).

Is using the vertical logo+wordmark lockup an option?

I'd need to see an example - not entirely sure I understand the question :) All options are on the table, I think.

vertical logo+wordmark

Something like this, potentially.

that's on the table - definitely.

Personally, I would be more inclined to change my avatar to the fox, or a version of the fox. I don't entirely know if I would change my personal avatar to something with a brand on it.

But that's just my initial thought.

Are there other options to consider along with this?

Yeah, I get that - it's a little corporate in this context.

Other options are in comments 4 & 5. We could try others, but those two are the most obvious approaches (and I don't think they completely work, as noted above). Might be best to chat more in person about the next steps.

facebook social avatar - fox 02

Hi all, after discussing with John this morning we thought it might be a good idea to work backwards - making sure the avatar reads well at small scale, first, as the 403x403 will most likely have impact at it's larger size. Here's a mockup of the same image at both sizes (denoted by the magenta circles) of the fox, closer-up and cropped-in. I think it reads well at small scale, and shows some cool flame/tail at the larger size. Let me know what you think.

I like :) Will this appease Pete's concerns as well, do you think?
Sounds like this is really close - please LMK if Pete approves/this is final.

Lee - can we include a link to this avatar in the design repository when we get closer to launch?
