Currently the make API returns items but it would be good to determine whether all returned content is remixable or not. If there are cases where the content can't be remixed, we need a flag returned per item, so the client-side can determine whether this should show a remix icon or not.
Scott and I discussed this over lunch; we think it would be best to add a "remixURL" attribute to the MakeAPI that tools add, to make it easy to remix stuff. If this attribute is not present, then the content is not remixable. Does that work?

Yeah, remixURL sounds like a good solution to the problem.

Not sure if this is the proper ticket to discuss, but just want to point out that I get questions about being able to turn off the remix button from time to time after demoing Popcorn Maker. The biggest push has come from non-profit leaders in the youth media sector, who are very conscientious about protecting their youth from harassment. I talked to an organizer who does a wonderful youth poetry slam event, and she was excited about using Popcorn to visualize the slam poems, but became concerned with the a call to remix, as some of the poems address very personal issues like being queer and suicidal etc. I think it could make sense to have a check box that is checked on by default and says “allow others to remix my Make” That way we’re still encouraging remix but the option to opt-out is still available.
I'd like to hear from Brett on this. I'd like to say that all content is remixable, full stop. If you don't want your stuff to be remixable, you need to use other tools. The whole point of what we're making is remix. Setting up two-tier content is going to suck.

Maybe it's not a "this content is remixable or not" it's a "I can see remixes of this thing in the Gallery"? You know how you can disable video responses/comments in a youtube video? You can't stop people from saying things, but you can prevent that from becoming visible.
We've discussed this a lot, and have always come back to the decision that we don't want to allow non remixable content. It's a fundamental piece of webmaker (and the web in general).

I can see some cases for non-remixable content, but they're limited to administrative reasons, and ought not be user focused (ie: we start using Thimble Makes as a CMS of some sort)

If content is always remixable, we don't need a flag to show if it is remixable or not. Once we have content that is not remixable, we can reopen this.
