Steps to reproduce:
(OS: Mac OS X 10.8.3, Thunderbird v17.0.5)
1. I installed an addon called "Google Tasks Sync" which added a widget to the Today Pane view.
2. I right clicked on an email and choose "Convert to -> Google Task".
3. That caused the today pane to stretch to a very very long pane, as well as the main window, and the edge of the main windows turns black.
4. I tried resizing manually but it is very wide it will take forever (it is a two step process first resize the today pane, then resize the Main Window, and so on).
5. removing the add-on doesn't fix the problem.
I just found the option to reet the layout through "Help >> Restart with add-ons disabled" and when prompted checked "reset toolbars and controls" then "Save Changes and Restart" which fixed the problem.
