Usually

Sat May 18 12:29:04 -0700 2013 /Stage[main]/Timezone/Osxutils::Systemsetup[timezone]/Exec[osx_systemsetup -settimezone America/Los_Angeles]/unless (err): Check "/usr/sbin/systemsetup -gettimezone | awk -F \": \" '{print $2}' | grep -i America/Los_Angeles" exceeded timeout

but also, just once

Tue May 14 16:21:34 -0700 2013 /Stage[main]/Disableservices::Common/File[/Users/cltbld/Library/Preferences/com.apple.DownloadAssessment.plist] (err): Could not evaluate: Operation timed out - connect(2) Could not retrieve file metadata for puppet:///disableservices/com.apple.DownloadAssessment.plist: Operation timed out - connect(2) at /etc/puppet/production/modules/disableservices/manifests/common.pp:123

so I suspect that this is not related to the systemsetup call.

It happens very occasionally - we see around one error per day - and the host just retries the puppet run without any problems. So there's very little impact, but it would be nice to solve this.

This is happening on Lion, as well -- at least, the timezone one. I don't know why getting the timezone would timeout, unless it's doing some network communication we don't know about.

When we rearchitect the system to do bare metal installs, we will no longer have puppet on slaves.
