It's serious, so I make it short: If Firefox doesn't re-add a way to stop gif-animations like it worked before with the ESC-key, our ways will split after over 10 years. I will not install an addon for this. I prefer practical usabillity in core aspects of handling. I just was on a page with a quite simple gif on the left, just two frames. I couldn't read the main text, as I was distracted. Removing the former handling of this issue was absolutly awful. I'm very disappointed.

FYI, there's a hidden pref image.animation_mode that you can set in about:config see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_:_FAQs_:_About:config_Entries

I couldn't manage to reproduce this issue. Since the bug was logged 9 years ago, most likely isn't reproducible anymore for the reporter also.
Closing this bug as resolved: Worksforme.

Seems pretty easy to reproduce for me, just visit any page with animated GIFs and notice there is no way to stop them.
Example page: https://bestanimations.com/Humans/Humans.html
AFAICT, there is no option in Settings to opt out from animations like these either (other than the hidden pref mentioned above).

Imagelib is more low level and it has a way to stop animations, just not hooked up to something a user can trigger, so the Firefox product might be the best place for this?
