User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.0; rv:21.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/21.0 (Beta/Release)
Build ID: 20130511120803
Steps to reproduce:
Clicked on PDF Statement files in bank website
Actual results:
Brief message "Waiting for <name of file> at bottom of new window. At top it says "Connecting" After a few seconds the message disappears and nothing else happens.
Expected results:
The PDF file should have appeared. Using IE9 there's no problem. It is also a new problem with Firefox. I have plug-in Adobe Acrobat 10.1.7.27 enabled. The same thing happens when trying to open brokers' statements.
Are you using the Acrobat plugin to open the PDF or the native PDF viewer?
Does it work with a new profile?

I presume, the plug in. By "native PDF viewer" do you mean Adobe Reader X?. If so, I've not used it because I can't access the pdf file by name. I'm in Firefox in a window which displays a link: Brokerage Statement [view|save]. "view|save" is the link and when that is clicked the previously described events occur. I've tried this with Schwab, Morgan Stanley and J.P. Morgan Chase statements. None work.
I haven't created a new profile. I've not had this problem with previous versions of Firefox although I don't know exactly which version was the last one that worked.(In reply to Loic from comment #1)

No, the native PDF viewer is the PDF reader included in Firefox, not 3rd-party plugins like Acrobat Reader or SumatraPDF.
Are you able to open any PDF file with Acrobat plugin, like http://excerpts.numilog.com/books/2297001363.pdf ?

Ok, so try this FAQ: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/windows-media-or-other-plugins-stopped-working
FF21 changed the plugin directory, so that's why it doesn't work anymore, I guess.

plugins.load_appdir_plugins now set at "true" but it still doesn't work.
Type about:plugins in Firefox URL bar and check the name of the Acrobat DLL. Then find the folder where it's installed on your computer and report the folder path here.

Adobe PDF Plug-In For Firefox and Netscape 10.1.7
And where are located these files on your computer? Make a search through Windows Explorer.

It doesn't answer to my question.
Do you see this DLL in %APPDATA%\Mozilla\plugins?

I don't seem to have a %APPDATA%\Mozilla\plugins folder. Only %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Extensions. And that doesn't have the nppdf32.dll file in it.

The issue is likely related to the fact Firefox 21 has changed the plugin folder. So you need to find the folder whedre the plugin is. Just use Windows Explorer to find this DLL, it's not so hard to do.

The only place I could find nppdf32.dll is in Blocklist.xml. Clicking on Tools, Add-ons,Plugins in Firefox produced the attachment. Searching Windows Explorer for "plugins" produced a lot of hits including the Thunderbird path that I sent earlier but nothing to do with Mozilla or Firefox.

So maybe this version is outdated with known security exploits. Is Acrobat Reader up-to-date on your machine?

That brings up another problem. I clicked on the "Check for Updates" link in Tools,Add-ons,Plugins. It indicated that Adobe Reader Version 10.1.7.27 needed to be updated. So, I proceeded to update. It asked me to download Adobe Reader X Version 1.4. So, I went through the procedure. An Adobe message came up that the application was already installed. So, I closed Firefox and opened it again. I checked my plugins and the same message appeared. So, just in case something had actually changed, I tried reading the PDF files again but again it failed. My next move will be to uninstall Firefox and download it again. We'll see what happens.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox v. 21. I tried reading PDF's. I checked my plugins and was told that my Adobe v.10.7.27 needed to be upgraded. Followed instructions and was offered Adobe Reader X v. 10.4, just as before. So, in sum, nothing has changed.

Correction. The updated version offered is 10.1.4, not 10.4 and the version I have is 10.1.7.27, not 10.7.
When I check my stand alone Adobe Reader X "help" it has a menu item: Plugins. That lists 10.1.7.27 as being installed. When I click on updates: No updates available.

For Vista, the current version is 10.1.4, for Win 7/8, it's 11.0.3 (and 10.1.4 too).
Does this plugin is disabled in about:addons (section "plugins")?
If yes, try about:config > extensions.blocklist.enabled = false

I uninstalled Acrobat Reader and reinstalled it. This time it loaded v.10.1.4.38. That didn't change anything. I found pluginreg.dat in AppData/ etc. That contained a listing for nppdf32.dll in C:/Program Files/Mozilla Firefox/Plugins. That version is 10.1.4.38 also. Why it doesn't show up when searching in Windows Explorer, I don't know.
According to Tools,Add-ons, the plugin is enabled. I tried again in IE9. There the plugin is AcroPDF.dll, same version stored in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Acrobat\ActiveX. And that combination works fine.

Problem Solved! I clicked on Help, Troubleshooting Information and then, Reset Firefox. That did the trick.
Thanks for all your help.

I think there's still a bug in Firefox. You will recall that originally I had Acrobat Reader v. 10.1.7.27 installed and you explained that Firefox uses v. 10.1.4. I received a message that an update to Acrobat Reader X was available and so I downloaded it. It turned out to be v.10.1.7.27 again. I tried reading the PDF's with it and it worked fine (so the original problem was a corrupt Firefox). But when I checked my plugins for updates it came up that the Adobe Reader plugin needed to be updated. So I clicked download and it took me to V. 10.1.4 again.
I haven't installed that because when I tried it before, the installer reported that the application had already been installed.

Hi hgruenberg,
Are you still having this issue with Firefox and Acrobat Reader X with newer versions?

I haven't bothered to pursue it but my most recent bug which is very troublesome is #583191. I'm listed for it on the bug report but it doesn't show up on my dashboard.
