From Bugzilla Helper: User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:0.9.1+) Gecko/20010622 BuildID: 2001062206 Normally, when you download headers from a large newsgroup for the first time, the box that asks if you want to "download first 300, download all, etc." is modal. But if you get to the newsgroup by an external "news://" link, then the popup is not modal and you are able to unsubscribe/do-other-stuff to the newsgroup before closing the popup. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Have mail/news closed (I'm not sure this is required, but it was like this when I tested) 2. Click on a "news://" link from a webpage to a newsgroup that has a large number of un-downloaded headers. This should cause the dialog to pop up. 3. Before closing the dialog, right click on the new newsgroup and click "unsubscribe". It should dissappear. 4. Click "OK" on the popup to download the headers. 5. Observe mozilla vomit. Actual Results: Mozilla crashes, presumably because the pointer to the newsgroup is now null (or something like that - I don't know how this stuff works internally). Expected Results: Mozilla does not crash and/or spits out an error message because the newsgroup no longer exists on your local box (it is unsubscribed). But more importantly, the popup should have been modal which would have prevented the unsuspected unsubscribing in the first place. This only occurs when I go to the newsgroup from an external link. If I subscribe to a large newsgroup manually via the subscribe box in mail/news and try this, the popup is modal and I can't unsubscribe to cause the problem.

I guess this doesn't work if you try this on a newsgroup that you have been to in the past. Or, potentially, it doesn't work if you go to a server that you have been to in the past. I say this because I just tried it again with the same newsgroup and the popup was modal as expected. This may cause problems in confirming this bug.
Thanks for such a detailed report! Did you have a talkback-enabled build, or a GDB stack you can provide us with?

I didn't at the time, and now I can't seem to recreate it because of what may be another bug - clicking on a news:// link (like the URL field) above either opens mail/news and doesn't take me to the newsgroup or it puts the url in the address bar and shows a blank screen. There has been some flakyness w/ loading pages in this mornings builds, so I guess this will have to wait.

I was wrong in my description of how I thought this bug happens. I was able to finally figure out how to recreate it, so I'm filing a new bug with a new description and marking this one invalid. New bug: 87687
