Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; rv:21.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/21.0 (Beta/Release)
Build ID: 20130511120803

Steps to reproduce:

Scroll a page up and down with the mouse wheel.

Actual results:

The display flickers.

Expected results:

No flicker. Scrolling the same page in any other browser does not show flicker.
Posted this new issue at the request of Anthony Hughes in bug #857938.

Relevant comments from bug #857938:

For me, disabling smooth scrolling makes the problem go away, but I would rather use smooth scrolling.

Disabling hardware acceleration fixed it for me. Options > Advanced > General. Smooth scrolling is still enabled and works, although it's not quite as smooth. Video hardware:

Also, please let us know if this happens in the latest Nightly and any previous Firefox releases, any URLs this happens with, and whether you have any add-ons/plugins installed.

The problem definitely happened with Firefox 20 as well. I have no notes about any earlier versions. I have yet to try one of the Nightly builds.

It happens with any page that has enough content that it can be scrolled up and down at least a page. I will post specific URLs shortly.

I've tried installing all of these add-ons and plugins in Firefox 21 with a new profile on my Windows 7 system. I've not been able to reproduce this issue on any of the URLs you provided. Now my system has an NVidia Geforce 8600GT so it's possible this might be related to the chipset in your graphics card. Unfortunately we can't confirm that since your card has been disconintued for quite some time.

I think the only way forward here is if you can try to narrow down a regression range for us, starting with which Firefox release this bug starts with for you.

Note, Uplay which you listed above, if it's version 1.0.0.0 should be blocked as per https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/blocked/p113. If it isn't you should remove it.
Re-enabled hardware acceleration and restarted in safe mode as requested. The flicker did not appear in safe mode. Restarted Firefox in normal mode and the problem reappeared. I'm going to try this a few more times, because the problem is intermittent, but it's starting to look like this is yet another problem with an add-on.

For the record, the flicker I see affects a horizontal section of the screen about an inch high, and moves up and down gradually. For example, if I use the scroll wheel to move the screen up, then down, by the same amount repeatedly, the affected area gradually moves down the screen. Sometimes no flicker is visible, but playing with the scroll wheel eventually makes the problem appear.

I will continue to test and report back here.

Thanks for tip on Uplay, which I have disabled.
Interesting. Confirmed that running in Safe mode (with smooth scrolling and hardware acceleration verified as enabled) does not show the flickering problem. I've tried this several times now so it's not a fluke. However, running in regular mode, with all add-ons disabled (all plugins and extensions), the problem remains.

If Safe Mode just disables all add-ons and uses default settings, that presumably means there's a setting I'm using somewhere that's causing this. I've been through all the settings and find nothing special.

It's starting to look like starting with a new profile might fix this, so I'll try that next. Still, I wish there was some way to figure out what's really going on.
Thanks for looking into this further Jeff. Safe-mode also disables JS JIT so maybe this is related to that.

Is there a reliable way to test that without going to Safe mode? For instance, is it equivalent to simply disabling Javascript in Options > Content?
Safe Mode Disables HWA as well as JIT.
Ah, so that's not really telling us anything.
Likely an GFX Issue.

Still an issue in Firefox 24.
(In reply to Jeff Rivett from comment #17)
> Still an issue in Firefox 24.

Could you let me know the exact model number of your graphics card? For example, something like ZT-20109-10P. Until we can get our hands on the same hardware and see this for ourselves I fear this will go unresolved indefinitely.
I will endeavour to locate the Zotac model number the next time I open up the PC. I no longer have the packaging, so that's no help. I have the manual, but it's completely generic. The Zotac web site no longer lists that model. The device appears in all sysinfo-type software with the nVidia chipset identifier only: GeForce GTS 250.

I should point out that I've also seen this same behaviour on a Windows XP box with a completely different video card, so I'm having trouble believing that it's specific to my card.

I'm starting to get the feeling that there's something about the way I configure Windows that's exposing this behaviour; something most people don't do. For instance, I use the Windows Classic theme everywhere, and I usually disable all the animations Windows normally does on the desktop.
(In reply to Jeff Rivett from comment #19)

Thanks, anything we can do to reduce the variability between our systems and yours will theoretically increase the probability if us reproducing us (a necessary first step). Once I have the model number I can try to track it down from 3rd-party sources (EBay, Craigslist, etc).

What is the card in your Windows XP machine? That might give us an additional lead to follow.

Also, is there anything else you can tell us about the way you configure Windows? There's likely something in that that's causing this. Alternatively, you could try debugging this on your side by switching those preferences back to default one by one and see if that makes a difference.
Here are a few of the settings I always change on Windows systems that might be involved:
- display theme: Windows Classic
- visual effects: basically everything disabled
- ClearType contrast: 1000
- desktop background: solid colour
These settings stand out because they are unusual, at least as compared with typical Windows configurations.

I'm still working on getting display hardware details from all affected systems.

I'm getting the same flickering with HWA, smooth scrolling enabled but "Enable Desktop Composition" in Windows->System Properties->Advanced->Performance->Settings->Visual Effect disabled.

Thanks, I'll try to track down this hardware in-house to see if we can get this reproduced. Is there any websites in particular where you are seeing this?
For the record, in Windows->System Properties->Advanced->Performance->Settings->Visual Effects, I have everything disabled, except for:
- Show shadows under windows
- Show thumbnails instead of icons
- Show translucent selection rectangle
- Show window contents while dragging
- Smooth edges of screen fonts
Hi!

I reinstalled Windows 7 64-bit (Firefox 27.0) on my second drive and got the same flicker as described in this bug report.

I fixed it by switching to the Aero Windows 7 Theme.

The flicker is reproducible by switching back to the Windows 7 Basic Theme.

Hope that helps.

Yes thank you. Unfortunately this card is unavailable for sale in Canada. I'll have to track down something similar. Do you know how your card differs technically from NVidia's reference cards?
Shouldn't be much difference from any other GTX 660 Ti, except quieter cooling fans and a little automatic overclocking.

see Mini Review under:

Was the driver installed along with a Palit software bundle or are you using the drivers direct from NVidia.com?
I managed to track down an ASUS GTX 660 Ti - I hope this reproduces the bug. It should be delivered by February 25th.

Clean Windows 7 (with SP1) Home Premium 64Bit + AMD chipset driver + installing All Updates + Firefox 27.0 (newest release at that moment) + NVIDIA GeForce Experience using express install for driver
(only releases, no beta)

Nothing changed, every setting unchanged, everything at default

Flickering happens.

Fixing the flicker:
Change from "Windows 7 Basic Theme" to "Aero Windows 7 Theme"

Changing back reproduces the flicker.
Switching from Windows Classic theme to a Windows 7 Aero theme seems to have fixed the problem on my Windows 7 machine. Of course that's not an option for Windows XP, which is still seeing this problem in my experience.
The NVidia Geforce 660 Ti arrived today and I was able to install it in my Windows 7 SP1 system. Unfortunately I have been unable to reproduce any flickering. I've tried configuring my system based on comments above but nothing I do enables me to reproduce this bug. There must be some other variable that I'm missing.

Happens also for me (for instance on this page, but about:addons is especially bad ).
Looks like that whole screen is constantly redrawn when tab with problematic page is active.
Some oteher pages work fine and no problem on any pages with chrome.

Same for me OpenSuse Leap, Firefox 45 (graphics driver, Nvidia proprietary), and Fedora 23, Firefox 46 (graphics driver, AND open-source).
Tearing observed on "Fedora 24 / KDE" + "Firefox 50.1.0" with the open "nouveau" driver on "Nvidia Geforce GT 730" (ZOTAC). I did not have those problems on an earlier Nvidia Quadro FX 1800 (though there were some problems with fade-in/fade-out effects and occasional hangup of the GUI).

The effect is extremely noticeable on this very page. Once scrolling stops, what is seen on the screen is not aligned with what Firefox thinks it is displaying (noticeable when marking text)

Solution is to switch off "Smooth scrolling".
"Hardware acceleration" can stay enabled.
Switching off "Hardware acceleration" but keeping "Smooth scrolling" does not fix things.

Actually it still happens with smooth scrolling "off", but its livable.

When I scroll this page it works for some time (up and down), then switches over to a flickering mode, then goes back to working for some time...
In the end, I got rid of the annoyance by telling the Compositor of KDE to always do "Full Screen Repaints".

System Settings > Display and Monitor > Compositor "side-icon" > Tearing prevention ("vsync") :: Set to "Full screen repaints" (Other options are: "Never", "Automatic", "Only when cheap", "Re-use screen content")

This bug has returned in Firefox 95.0 (Linux, Fedora 35, X11 Cinnamon Desktop, NVidia video). This was an upgrade from Fedora 34, where the problem wasn't seen (I don't have what version of Firefox had been in place before the upgrade).

:(In reply to James E. LaBarre from comment #50)

(I don't have what version of Firefox had been in place before the upgrade).

You could try https://mozilla.github.io/mozregression/ to find the exact patch that caused the regression bug. I am also only a user but I found that this helps a lot the developers so they know which exact change introduced the bug. Since you're on Linux it should be pretty easy to run via Command Line https://mozilla.github.io/mozregression/quickstart.html

I ran that mozregression tool, and it appears that "flickering" (basically, when I scroll the maximized window, the desktop flashes up briefly and then returns to the browser window) occurs all the way back to a 2021-06-10 build. But it isn't that the flickering stops before that, burt rather that any builds from 2021-06-09 and earlier will come up with a "your tab has crashed" as soon as it opens, and any page you try to open also crashes.

So whatever the bug is, it seems to be an incompatibility in some packages in the F35 upgrade, or perhaps an incompatibility with NVidia's drivers. But this only happens with Firefox and Thunderbird, no other applications (such as xed, LibreOffice, VLC). And it primarily happens when those are full-screen (it is easily reproducible in full-screen).

Considering how well the upgraded system is running in general, I'm considering a fresh install of F35, so if there's any debug information you need let me know before I wipe the system.

Severity: normal → S3

James, are you still experiencing this issue?

Flags: needinfo?(j.e.labarre)

Have not noticed this lately, although I have also rebuilt my system at least once since then (trying to get around broken theming in the newer GTK+ libraries).

Thanks for confirming!

Please file a new bug if the issue returns.
