From Bugzilla Helper:
User-Agent: Mozilla/4.76 [en] (Windows NT 5.0; U)
BuildID: 20000625
I've downloaded latest mozilla 0.9.2beta (Jun 25 or something)
After installation, When I start Netscape, I choose a NS4 profile,
and Mozilla tell "it's an old profile" and asks me if I want to
convert it. I says YES and mozilla pops-up a message simply
saying "There is not enough room on your harddrive for this operation".
There 3 gigabytes available in the directory (H:) where my NS4
account is stored, and C: harddrive has at least 300MB free.
Not H: (my home directory) is "network mounted" from my own
directory (D:\Cedric is shared, and mounted as H:, my home dir)
There is many things wrong with this dialog
1) Mozilla don't tell me which hard drive is full.
2) Mozilla don't tell how much more space it would need.
3) Mozilla should have an option "Try Anyway" just in case
it makes a wrong prediction like here.
4) Mozilla should eventually provides an alternate location
for the profile in this case.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install latest 0.9.2beta mozilla build for windows
2. Select an old NS4 profile

Reporter,
See also bug 60734 which requests that user be able to specify which drive for
profile storage. The migrated profile is always stored in C:\Documents and
Settings\<user name>\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\salted name
on a Windows 2000 system. It is not stored in a similar fashion as 4.x
(drive:\program files\netscape\users\profile).
Do you have permission to write to that directory? Is your profile greater than
the 300mb on that drive?
Trying to narrow down the issues-

- I have write permissions to the directory.
- My NS4 profile is pretty big, 271M. (which is currently more
than the space left on C:, which is 201M now). Unfortunalely,
I don't know *exactly* how much space was available when I
originally reported the bug, so maybee(?) mozilla was right
when it said harddrive full, who knows?

Reporter: Is the drive in question FAT32? If so, run chkdsk and see if it
corrects a free space errors. THat might be the root of the problem.

All my drives are NTFS.
But I'd like to mention again that my biggest complain is the error dialog
itself, which is insuffisent. Whether or not Mozilla did the right "Free Space"
calculation is another issue, But I cannot verify that since the dialog doesn't
tell me where (which disk) and How much disk space is needed.

The Dialog should say something like that:
"Mozilla cannot convert the old NS4 profile because there is not enough
disk space available on disk "D:". Mozilla needs 326Mb and there is only
238Mb available"
Saying only "harddrive full" doesn't help anyone!
Additionally, the following options should be added:
[Try Anyway]: asks mozilla to go ahead with the conversion. this is useful
in all special situation when diskspace calculation is wrong.
For example: "D:" is a SAMBA share on an IRIX system with a
buggy samba version....
[Change Location]: asks Mozilla tto put the profile elsewhere.
COULD SOMEONE CONFIRM THIS BUG? THIS DIALOG SHOULD REALLY BE BETTER!

Severity: blocker → major
changing product to browser and component to Profile Migration since this is not
a mail only migration problem. Reassigning QA contact to Grace
Component: Account Manager → Profile Migration
Product: MailNews → Browser
QA Contact: nbaca → gbush
cc'ing nbaca as she has an interest in this too. Grace if you disagree with the
reassignment, reassign back to me.

QA assignment ok,
I will change summary to reflect reporter's last comments. It sounds like
profile is too large to migrate to C: (and currently we cannot change
destination location of a migrated profile (there is another bug to rectify
this)
I agree -dialog should be more meaningful
and I will confirm
Reporter - please edit summary if I am not on target
Status: UNCONFIRMED → NEW
Ever confirmed: true
Summary: Cannot Import NS4 Profile - says "harddrive full" → Disk full dialog during profile migration should be more meaningful

The new title is OK.
I don't know if my profile was too large for disk C: It seemed strange, But How
can I guess how much memory Mozilla will need to store my profile? Same as NS4?
More? Less?

I was referring to your comment:

The migration consists of a copy of the 4.x profile files (not all but I am not
sure which are not copied except for cache) to a new directory for mozilla
So that would be less space needed.
dbragg, can you comment on space reqs for migration- what is copied?

When I last worked on it (which was a long time ago), the main profile
directory, the mail directory and news directory were all copied. No other
directories were migrated. This includes the cache dir, the archive dir and any
other directories created either by the program or the user. These non-migrated
directories are pretty small though.
It's really easy for a mail dir to get huge, especially if the Sent and Trash
folders are never cleaned out.

Cedric,
Is this still a problem for you?

If the dialog has not been upgraded, YES, it's still a problem.
I'm waiting for this bug to be resolved to give Mozilla another try
at home.
And this bug be a problem for many people switching from Netscape->Mozilla,
I believe.

Responding to Comment #5, I'd suggest the following wording for the error dialog
(where xxx and yyy should be replaced with the disk space needed and the disk
space available):
"Mozilla cannot convert this profile because there is not enough
disk space available on drive C. Mozilla needs xxx MB and there is only
yyy MB available. Please make the needed disk space available on drive C
and try again."

This bug is filed in a bugzilla component related to pre-Firefox code which no longer exists. I believe it is no longer relevant and I am therefore closing it INCOMPLETE.
If you believe that this bug is still valid and needs to be fixed, please reopen it and move it to the Toolkit:Startup and Profile System product/component.
