We would like to encourage drm-free ebook reading on our platforms, and currently the quality of free format e-book readers on marketplace needs a major push. The idea here to explore option of developing an ebook reader app as a core app. Right now the only way to get epub files on the device is to side-load them over bt/usb from a more capable machine.
Current 3rd-party app is https://marketplace.firefox.com/app/epubreader Bug 848371 is the tracking bug for browser downloads, which would solve the side-loading issue for web-based storefronts.
FWIW, I think it makes the most sense to introduce new Necko facilities to make use of Gecko's built-in functionality instead of having to implement an XHTML renderer in JS on top of a browser engine: https://groups.google.com/d/msg/mozilla.dev.webapi/ktT24MDEkBY/kCq16QAvn8MJ
