If you click on a "View File" button for any text file, it opens the default file with Notepad and allows editing of the default file. We should open the file read-only, so the user cannot accidentally edit the default file.
This can be seen in the dialog "Customizing the Browser - Part Two" when you View File either readme.txt or panels.rdf. Also, for .bmp the same problem arises because it opens the .bmp with Paint allowing the user the modify the default .bmp. See the dialog "Customize the CD Autorun Screen". It allows editing of the default background .bmp and the install.txt files.
Summary: View File allows editing of default text files → View File allows editing of default text or .bmp files
Maybe aneasy fix is to change the file permissions to readonly. But when we copy these files for a new config, we would have to make sure we make them writable.
Is another option to use quikview.exe instead of notepad.exe? Is it standard on all versions of Windows? quikview does not allow you to edit files, but it does have a toolbar button to open notepad or editing. So it'd be an improvement, but still a user could edit the file with another click. quikview can also view .bmp files: http://lxr.mozilla.org/mozilla/source/cck/cckwiz/iniFiles/Branding_page2.ini#113 could be changed from 113 onCommand=OpenViewer(%ShellBgBitmap%) to 113 onCommand=command(%NCIQuikView% "%ShellBgBitmap") The ugly part on my Win95, is the quikview opens in a small narrow window, so I'm forced to resize the window to actually see the .txt or .bmp file. I don't know how to change the default window size.
Removing nscckrtm. Will fix this only if time permits.
