See the attached screenshot. The tab on the far left was selected, then I used alt+cmd+right arrow to switch to the tab on the right.

Based on discussion on IRC it seems like the mouse cursor was hovering the tab on left and so this would be the desired effect. I believe Margaret said she couldn't reproduce this when the mouse wasn't over a tab. See also bug 879597 which may be related.
