Steps to reproduce:

I attempted to avoid looking uneducated in the various web sites I visit by selecting, "check my spelling as I type" via the path: tools>options>advanced from the Mozilla Firefox menu bar. Allowing a superior spell checker to that which I mentally possess and that is always on would provide me with the confidence to know that all text typed would appear professional. With each new version of Firefox, I always set my preferences first to assure their accuracy.


Actual results:

While Mozilla Firefox seems to be able to remember all other preferences [e.g.- font (size, color ... etc), default browser choice, security settings and passwords, the choice to have my spelling checked as I type appears to be problematic. From what I can detect, this preference choice is lost or "un-selected" by an unknown force under two specific terms. Time and closing the browser window. Because I do not log out of my computer and my internet connection is always on, I do not sign out of Firefox but may simply choose to work on another project. Inevitably, reopening Firefox will reveal misspelled words when I begin to type. 


Expected results:

As is currently, in other browsers and; I assume (unless I've always submitted misspelled words in my Firefox text posts), my past preference choices to be kept. It only seems logical that a programmer with the capabilities to write a file that can maintain and recall untold numbers of passwords would certainly be able to write a code that would allow the same program to remember something insignificant and simple. Comparatively, this choice seems to be of less importance that that of password recall and therefore, a simpler procedure. In short, all of my preferences should be kept until "I", make the decision to edit the items.

Can you please try that with a new profile (http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles) and in safe mode (http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode) and report back whether it is still reproducing?

Your Bugzilla sucks ! First, I get a notification that the issue I submitted months ago is about to expire because ... You failed to notify me of a fix. Secondly, some knucklehead named Michael requests some sort of nonesense that makes no sense to me whatever as he mentions a profile? Next, I attempt to submit a comment asking for clarification but am told I must log in before this is possible. Then comes the statement that ... "My user namre or password is incorrect"? Isn't it amazing that you finally founds me but ... you aren't sure it is me? UFB !

The next suck point comes as a result of my following your directions. I am supposed to receive an email to varify that I am whom I think I am just so you can be sure not to divuldge any classified intellegence documentation that may jeopardise our National Security but the problem is that it never arrived ! Why am I not surprised? Oh, an in case you notice any misspelled words within this messsage ... Michael, you'll take note that my oruiginal complaint was about Firefox being unable to keep my spell checker on !

Please note that I finally received the email and after ten minutes, was logged into this suck ass site. Jesus, if you don't want to help people, why not simply say so by placing a large ad that reads: "Mozilla Firefox could care less about your problems as long as we continue getting paid so F.O. !" It would be much more decent that tormenting people who thought they were dealing with rational individuals. Oh, and my spell checker still won't work correctly. It works just fine on Apple Safari for Windows.

@Mihaela, it sounds like the issue is intermittent, so using a new profile won't make it easy to reproduce.

Thanks for the report.  Sorry it couldn't be processed soon, but every day almost 300 reports are filed, on average.  Also, most reports are not looked at by *the programmers* first.

At least on Linux, that setting is on by default.  Is it not so on Windows?

For single-line input fields, spell checking is not enabled by default, so by default you have to enable it every time using the field's context menu.  If you want it, you can enable it for all single-line inputs using the hidden preference layout.spellcheckDefault.  If you do want it, please ask how.

Those are probably processed by very different parts of Firefox, possibly made by different groups of programmers.

The bug can't be expired. We are able to close the bug, but this or anything like this hasn't happened here (unless you mean a different bug). Sorry you had any issues.

Insulting people on bugzilla is likely to just get your Bugzilla account blocked. Note that her name is Mihaela, not Michael, and she was first person, of those who have seen the report, who decided to ask for something that might make it easier to find the cause of the setting loss.

Her comment contains a link to an article explaining what a profile is (a set of files containing your settings).  Creating a new profile could help to see if the setting disappears due to your other settings or extensions.  I don't think it is likely to help in this case though.

We get hundreds of bugs per day, and as per 1.2 of the bugzilla etiquette <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/page.cgi?id=etiquette.html>, nobody has to work on your bug first (it seems like it doesn't happen to many people).  Many people processing or even fixing bugs are actually doing it for free.

If you need help that is easier to understand, try asking a question at <https://support.mozilla.org>. We have plenty of contributors there who spend their free time helping users out.  Bugzilla is more about getting final information on bugs to the specific programmers who can fix them.
