Hi Cmore, Gareth, and Stacy-

We'd like to update the http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/opt-out.html page to provide information about opting out of web site analytics tracking on Mozilla web properties using the Google Analytics tool.

I'll schedule a kick-off meeting for us.

Thx,
Jen
This is the generic end user GA opt-out available for all major browsers:

https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout
Hi Matej-

Would you have some time in July to take a look at http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/opt-out.html and update the text of this page to explain how a user could opt-out of the Google Analytics-based web site reporting used on Mozilla web sites (short answer: install this Add-On https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout)?

I think the new version of the page can be much less wordy than the current version.

After we have new text, we'll assign to a front end dev to migrate the page into Bedrock.

If you don't have time, let us know and Stacy said she could take a spin at writing something for you to edit :)

Thanks so much,
Jen

Is the idea to remove everything and just mention the add-on? Or edit what's there and add the add-on to the list? Thanks.

Remove everything and just explain/link to the add-on. Thx
Hi all, we have a new copy contractor, Troy Palmer, working with us and I've asked him to help out on this page.

Troy, please ask any questions you may have here.
Hi everyone

I've written a couple of options for the Google Analytics Opt-out Add-on. You can find them here:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1-uIXTml1sBL9ihkR12-pq0AuTFz-IZ2vmE9f4OqPApY/edit?usp=sharing

Hopefully it all makes sense, but if anyone has any questions, please don't hesitate.

Thanks,
Troy
I've made some comments in the Google Doc. Thanks!
Thanks, Troy and Chris.

I have a slight preference for Option 2.

Chris - are you suggesting we say something like "The add-on instructs the Google Analytics not to" instead of "The add-on instructs the Google Analytics JavaScript not to"?

Stacy - can you suggest a way to not imply PII with "your data"? All I can think of is something like "want to prevent Google Analytics from tracking your actions on the web" but I'm guessing we don't want to do with that either.

On the existing page, http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/opt-out.html, we don't provide a reason for why a user might want to opt out. Could we say "Want to opt out of Google Analytics tracking"?

Also - marking this one confidential.

Hey Chris and Jennifer

Thanks for the feedback. I've added a new version that addresses the comments about the use of 'data' and 'javascript'

Have a look in the doc and let me know what you think.

Cheers,

I created an option 4. Check it out and let me know what you all think. Regardless if you use the add-on or not, all GA data is anonymous. This just makes it invisible to Google Analytics.
Thanks, Cmore and Troy.

I do like Option.

Stacy and Matej - does that work for you?

Thx,
Jen

Sorry, I'm a bit confused. There appears to be an option 5 now. I'm not sure which one I'm supposed to look at.
Matej - please look at option 5. Thanks.

> Matej - please look at option 5. Thanks.

Thanks. I made a few small changes. Otherwise, looks good.
I just talked to Jishnu about this and he suggests that rather than a separate page, we instead re-write the existing opt-out section in the privacy policy and hyperlink it to https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout. I've taken a stab at rewriting it - any input is welcome. I tried to use the wording from Option 5 as a base for creating this.

Opt-out Procedures

We use Google Analytics on our website. They've provided a browser add-on that allows you to opt out of analytics data collection through websites that use their service.

Hi Stacy-

Chris and I fine with adding it to the privacy policy's opt-out section.

Will we keep the email opt-out language in that section too?

Troy - could you please take a look at the opt-out section of the privacy policy (http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/privacy-policy.html) and review Stacy's text above?

Thx,
Jen
Hi Jen - Yes, for now we'll keep the email opt-out language.
Hi everyone

I'll take a look and post again once I've made comments / edits.

Thanks,
Troy
I've added two new options (at the bottom of the doc — OPTIONS A & B) based on Stacy's version above. Please have a look and let me know what you think.

Thanks, Troy. I prefer A because it's more descriptive, but they both work. I also left a comment with a suggested edit.
I like A too. Looks great!
Does this bug need to be secret?

People are asking why our opt-out instructions don't work and I'd like to point them to the progress we are making on fixing them.

Good question -- I was wondering myself too. Jen: any issue with opening this up?
Jen hasn't objected; can we open this bug?

Gerv
Next steps:
1. I'll make this bug public.

2. I'll add this bug to the Mozilla.org Kanban board to make the following changes:

a. Update the Opt-out Procedures section of the Privacy Policy to read:

If you do not want data about your visits to Mozilla websites to be collected by Google Analytics, you can install the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on. The add-on keeps your visits anonymous and prohibits any data from being sent to Google Analytics.

with "Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on" linked to: https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout

b. Redirect http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/opt-out.html to the Opt-out Procedures section of the Privacy Policy here http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/privacy/policies/websites/
