Bug 497003 made a start on delivering OnDataAvailable off the main thread. To start this supports plain text HTML (and images in Bug 867755), but it does not support zipped content. This kind of support should be added.
Turns out we were wrong, and we actually got gzip off-main delivery in bug 497003.  Your code is even better than you think it is, Steve :)

Still needs testing--that will be covered by bug 882803.
