Details

[GP Peak, gaia master, mozilla-central]

Running a new Peak phone with a SIM card that has contacts saved from an old feature phone.

Launched Contacts app and attempted to import contacts from the SIM card. Response: the message "Reading from SIM card..." appears momentarily, then "Could not import contacts from SIM", but gives no hint as to why, which is frustrating. (Is there something wrong with the SIM? It works for making calls. Is it because I don't have an SD card in the phone? Is it simply a bug in the import code?)
Better reporting, if possible, seems like a reasonable request.

To better understand your particular case, though, do you see anything in adb logcat when this happens?
Nope, logcat doesn't show anything that looks even remotely related. (And then pressing "Retry" produces no fresh logcat output whatsoever.)

Maybe I should make a debug build and try that, but it'll take a while...
:jfkthame,

could you provide your gaia and gecko version? Also as :bkelly comments if you have some logs that would be really good for us.

Importing contacts from the SIM card is possible if you don't have a SD card, as they are stored in the MozContacts API.

Adding Reuben and Gregor masters of the universe of the Contacts backend.

Thanks folks!
Possible dupe of bug 886809. Can you try with those very recent commits m-c?
I get the same message, "Could not import contacts from memory card", for an SD w/o contacts. No explanation as to why. If this bug gets approved then I would suggest changing the SD message as well.
